Description: Hardcover. Black "Novelex" cloth binding with gold lettering to spine. With original, un-clipped dust jacket. Octavo (5 ?" x 7 ¼"). 227pp. *** Publisher Arkham House was established in 1939 in Sauk City, Wisconsin, by August Derleth and Donald Wandrei specifically to publish stories by H.P. Lovecraft and others whose works had mostly been printed in the "Weird Tales" magazine and remained unavailable in book form. *** Clark Ashton Smith was a poet and a sculptor, before gaining popularity as a short-story writer for "Weird Tales". This collection contains stories of adventurers seeking their fortune only to be confounded by harsh reality, and ends with some Kafka-esque tales of wistful regret. Includes the story "The Third Episode of Vathek", which completes a fragment by the author William Beckford, author of the early Gothic novel with Arabian setting, Vathek (1786). *** The dust jacket design is by Ronald Clyne and Wynn Bullock. *** Condition: A Fine, fresh copy with no ownership marks or underlining, in a Fine dust jacket, now protected in mylar. Binding tight. Bookplate of renowned bibliophile Richard Manney to front pastedown. Richard Manney was famous for buying the best copies he could, from Shakespeare folios to Arkham House collectibles. A portion of his library was sold at Sotheby's in 1991. *** Bleiler: The Guide to Supernatural Fiction, 1487; L.W. Currey: Science Fiction and Fantasy Authors, page 453. Nielsen 60.

SMITH, Clark Ashton. THE ABOMINATIONS OF YONDO.. Arkham House, 1960.

Price: US$2500.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: The last book published during the author's lifetime. The dust-wrapper cover pictures one of Smith's own sculptures, as photographed by the noted California photographer, Wynn Bullock, and the lettering design is by artist, Ronald Clyne; a photo on the rear dust-jacket panel is of the author, taken by Forrest J. Ackerman. The inscription reads "For Andrew and Janet I hope you will find a landing-spot somewhere in this mescellany of far-flung Time and Space. Affectionately, Clark. Sept. 14th, 1960." Andrew was his old childhood chum, Andrew Dewing, and his wife Janet. The book was signed the year of publication. A very-good +, copy of the book, some dusting at page-edges; the dust-wrapper is rubbed as is every copy I've found of this title most noticibly at the upper spine where some color has rubbed-off, and at the corner tips.
