About the book >.>.> I SET out to write the story of the 43rd (Wessex) Division primarily for the benefit of those who fought with it during the campaign in North-west Europe. Now that I have finished, I realize that I have, in addition, almost inadvertently evolved a character-study of its Commander. The truth is that the influence of his original mind and dynamic drive was so great that any account of the Division's battles would lack colour and life if he were treated merely as a highly efficient military calculating-machine. I hope I have given no offence. After all, who am I to judge? I am greatly indebted to the War Office for the facilities lavishly and promptly placed at my disposal by the Officer in Charge of Records, Droitwich; and, for the loan of invaluable material and maps, to the Commandant of the Staff College, Camberley; to Headquarters B.A.O.R; to the Director, Imperial War Museu
