Amis, Kingsley. That uncertain feeling: a novel. London: Victor Gollancz, 1955.

Price: US$12.17 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Amis, Kingsley. That uncertain feeling: a novel. London: Victor Gollancz, 1955. First edition. Hardback, good, no dustjacket. Red boards with Boots Booklovers Library sticker on the front. Boards slightly bumped at corners with small dent on the spine. Binding good. 254pp., a few pages slightly creased, contents clean and bright. In That Uncertain Feeling competition is stiff for the position of sub-librarian in Aberdarcy Library. For John Lewis, the situation is complicated by the attentions of daunting and desirable village socialite, Elizabeth Gruffyd-Williams, who is married to a member of the local Council. Pursuing an affair with her whilst keeping his job prospects alive is John's predicament, as he finds himself running down Welsh country lanes at midnight in a wig and dress, resisting the advances of local drunks and suffering the long speeches of a 'nut-faced' clergyman. At times tenderly satirical and at times riotously slap-stick, Amis sends up an array of rural stereotypes in this story about a man who doesn't know what he wants. First edition of the author's second novel. Amis père is currently out of literary favour -- which makes now a good time to gather him up, since he is far too important a figure and far too good a writer to be forgotten permanently.
