Attractive full leather binding, lettered and decorated in gilt to spine, title on black panel,with gilt borders to covers and gilt decorations to inside edges. Top page edges gilt. vi, 210pp. With engraved portrait to frontispiece, and 48 other illustrations in plates, mostly engraved or etched portraits of writers or artists, a few of them original etchings. Biography and critical view of Thackeray's writings. This copy also benefits from a very well done original pen and ink drawing of two figures playing cards, from style probably c.1800, that has been pasted to one of the blank prelim pages by a previous owner. Very Good condition: Clean and bright covers,with rubbed top spine and corners, contents also clean with some browning in places, and light spotting to endpapers. An old bookplate seems to have been removed from inside front cover. Pictures available.
