First edition; mixed first state, without the addition of Fremont's account of California, but no frontispiece, with an old bookseller's notation that "this copy never appears to have had one". Original light brown cloth, stamped gilt lettering, 5x8 inches, 399 pp, no illustrations. Good. Corners bumped with cardboard exposed there, some soil and drop marks on exterior, most of the gilt rubbed off. Description: First issue, with frontispiece. 8vo, pp. xvi, [17]-399, in original cloth with gilt-decorated spine. Lacks front free endpaper, cloth worn and faded, some foxing. Good. Dr. Elijah White was Presbyterian minister who first arrived in Oregon with his wife in 1836 in association with the Methodist Mission in the Willamette Valley. He made overland journeys in both directions during the next decade, and was appointed Indian Agent in 1841.
