Shakespeare, William. A Winter's Tale. J.M. Dent & Co, 1894.
Price: US$25.00 + shipping
Condition: Good
Description: If you're looking for a special volume of a Shakespeare play to celebrate a memorable theater performance, mark a milestone anniversary, or commemorate a child's first delightful experience with the bard, this petite volume is the perfect gift! This charming little book is bound in maroon cloth covers with gilt page tops and gilt title on spine, and the Shakespeare family coat of arms is stamped on the front cover. The endpapers display a colored version of the Shakespeare family heraldry along with their motto "Non Sans Droict" (Not Without Right). The frontispiece illustration is of the kitchen at Shakespeare's birthplace. The illustration is faced with a protective tissue which is printed with a poem to Shakespeare by "I.M." (James Mabbe, whose poem was printed in the first folio of 1623). Text in Greek from Euripides' Alcestis precedes the preface; Alcestis is thought by some scholars to be a source for the mysterious statue scene in "The Winter's Tale". The text in this Temple Shakespeare volume is the Cambridge edition, and includes a glossary, notes, and a preface written by Sir Israel Gollancz, an early 20th century Shakespeare scholar. The title page is richly illustrated and typeset in black and red, with lovely red act & scene markings continuing throughout the text. Please check other Mountain House Fine Books listings to find more titles from the charming Temple Shakespeare set. Gilt spine title and top gilt page edges aged, other page edges rough/uncut. Endpages and tissued pages are foxed.
