Just a trace of rubbing at the head and tail of the spine and at the very tips of the outside corners. White endpapers. Previous owner has trimmed around the text of the front inside flap and has pasted it to the front endpaper; also has cut around the image on the front cover of the dust jacket and pasted that on the free front endpaper, resulting in a light wrinkling of the first few pages. Binding is straight and tight. There are a couple light fingerprints on the blank pages at the rear of the book, but everything else is clean, white, and crisp. 315 pages. Blue topstain. 'The search for a man and a huge diamond brings Tarzan to two cities hidden in an extinct volcano. FC-1 has the unique distinction of being the one and only Burroughs book to have a frontispiece in full color. This was the first of the Tarzan titles to be illustrated by John Coleman Burroughs, the author's younger son. By contrast, the 1948 reprint has a very crude frontispiece, a different one, utilizing the jacket picture but with large uneven blank spaces gaping where the original title-and-author lettering was deleted.

Substantial watermark all along the upper and lower edges of the boards and spine with color transfer to the inside of the dust jacket at the head and tail of the spine area - mostly not visible on the exterior of the dust jacket - appears gray on about 2/3" of the tail of the spine. Light cream colored endpapers. Binding is straight and tight. Light cream colored pages are all clean and crisp. 315 pages. Red topstain. Dust Jacket - is a facsimile dust jacket - has light rubbing at the head and tail of the spine and at the tips of the outside corners. 1/16" of the upper edge of the rear cover has been chipped away, and there are a couple other smaller chips here and there. The twenty-fourth in the Tarzan series. 'The search for a man and a huge diamond brings Tarzan to two cities hidden in an extinct volcano. FC-1 has the unique distinction of being the one and only Burroughs book to have a frontispiece in full color. This was the first of the Tarzan titles to be illustrated by John Coleman Burroughs, the author's younger son. By contrast, the 1948 reprint has a very crude frontispiece, a different one, utilizing the jacket picture but with large uneven blank spaces gaping where the original title-and-author lettering was deleted.

The noble savage Tarzan first appeared in Burroughs' 1912 story Tarzan of the Apes, published in the pulp magazine The All-Story and in book form two years later. An archetypal feral child raised in the African jungle by Mangani great apes, Tarzan spawned innumerable works in literature and film, including 25 sequels and the popular Tarzan movie franchise which lasted from the 1930s to the 1960s. The fifth novel in the series, Tarzan and the Forbidden City follows a young man named Brian Gregory who disappears in Africa and is saved by Tarzan, who has been enlisted by the lost boy's father and sister.
