Ballantine white spine edition, first printing July 1965 (stated), Ballantine # U20204. Cover art by Bob Abbett. Tarzan and the Castaways is a collection of three stories by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the 24th and final in his series of twenty-four books about the jungle hero Tarzan. The title novella, and the two short stories were first published in pulp magazines in 1940 and 1941. The combined book was published first as a hardcover by Canaveral Press in early 1965, and as a paperback by Ballantine Books in July 1965.

The author traces the major themes and characters of Burrough's many books (including unpunlished manuscripts) and treats extensively the question of ERB's sources in the works of such prominent authors as Kipling, Haggard, and Wells and also lesser known writers such as Edwin Lester Arnold.

Description: Smaller octavo. Burgundy colored cloth covered boards and spine with black lettering on both the spine and the front board. Book has plenty of bumping at the head and tail of the spine with light accompanying rubbing. Light rubbing at the tips of the outside corners. Remains of a strip of tape on the upper edge of both boards. Ex-library copy has been in a couple different libraries, and have all the usual stickers, stamps, etc, as well as a facial tear on the free rear endpaper where a pocket was presumably removed. Binding is still straight and tight. Aside from the library markings, pages are clean. 229 pages. Dust Jacket - 1/4" of the head of the spine is chipped away and there are a few tiny chips at the tail. 1/8" chip in the tip of each of the outside corners, and another in the upper edge of the front cover about 3/4" over from the upper outside corner. Library sticker with dewey decimal lettering on the face of the tail of the spine. Upper corner of the front inside flap has been price clipped. Jacket art by Frank Frazetta. Description: An uncommon copy of one of 400 copies in the first state for this book. It became the 65th HC of ERB work. Clearly marked First Edition. There is two variants of this book. The first 400 copies where distributed in December 1964 with 5 copyright dates on the copyright page, with Tarzan and the Castaways being duplicate for a 1941 and 1965 date. The title page also states 1965. In the second state of 2600 copies a label was affixed which reduced the copyright dates to four by eliminating the 1941 Tarzan and the Castaways and correcting the date of the other to 1964. Like most releases by Canaveral several cloth color variants are present with no priority given. An exceptional copy, very fine in a very fine clipped DJ. Jacket now with a brodart cover. Provenance: From the Estate of Dr Stephen Landan, a life long Sci-Fi fan who regularly attended conventions in USA and UK and who was a longtime member of The World Science Fiction Society; 8vo 8" - 9" tall
