Price: US$4000.00 + shipping

Description: First edition, first printing of the fifth book in Burroughs' epic Tarzan series with with "Published, April, 1918" and W. F. Hall on the copyright page. Octavo, original green cloth with gilt titles to the spine and front panel. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Stephen Gray Best All good wishes, Edgar Rice Burroughs Tarzana California June 6 1939." In 1919, Burroughs purchased a large ranch north of Los Angeles, California, which he named "Tarzana". The citizens of the community that sprang up around the ranch voted to adopt that name when their community, Tarzana, California, was formed in 1927. Near fine in the rare original dust jacket which is in very good condition. This particular title is scarcely seen signed (Heins, T61; Zeuschner, 598). The noble savage Tarzan first appeared in Burroughs' 1912 story Tarzan of the Apes, published in the pulp magazine The All-Story and in book form two years later. An archetypal feral child raised in the African jungle by Mangani great apes, Tarzan spawned innumerable works in literature and film, including 25 sequels and the popular Tarzan movie franchise which lasted from the 1930s to the 1960s. The fifth novel in the series, Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar follows Tarzan in his return to Opar, the source of the gold where a lost colony of fabled Atlantis is located, and his daring escape from the clutches of the high priestess of Opar, La.

Burroughs, Edgar Rice. THE SON OF TARZAN .. A. C. McClurg & Co., Chicago, 1918.

Price: US$7500.00 + shipping

Description: Octavo, pp. [1-6] 1-394, illustrated by J. Allen St. John, original green cloth, front panel stamped in gold and blind, spine panel stamped in gold. First edition, later (probable fourth) printing with W. F. Hall imprint on verso of title leaf, dedication leaf present, and title page dated 1918, not 1917. By late June 1917, THE SON OF TARZAN, published in March 1917, had been reprinted twice. There were two printings of the McClurg edition with the title page dated 1918; this one with the Hall imprint probably preceded copies without the Hall imprint on the copyright page. The fourth book of the Tarzan series. Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 318. Clareson, Science Fiction in America, 1870s-1930s 117. Bleiler (1978), p. 35. Reginald 02311. Heins ST-3. A square, bright, clean, very good white paper copy in good four-color pictorial dust jacket correctly priced $1.30 on the spine panel (with wraparound illustration by J. Allen St. John) with wear and chipping, mostly shallow, along top and bottom edges, mainly spine ends and corner tips, some rubbing along spine and flap folds, and abrasions to rear panel, the largest measuring 12x80 mm. Despite the rather large combined print run, this is among the most difficult of the McClurg editions to obtain in jacket. A decent example of a rare jacket never touched by a paper conservationist.
