Grey, Zane. Tales of the Angler's Eldorado New Zealand. Hodder and Stoughton, London, 1926.

Price: US$199.96 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Zane Grey was known world-wide for his "cowboy" books set in Ameriuca's Wild West, but he had another side -- a love of big-game fishing. After a fishing trip to New Zealand in 1926 he published an account of it --- "Tales of the Angler's Eldorado New Zealand." This became a fisherman's classic and resulted in NZ becoming firmly placed on the international map of game fishing locations. His book was first published in 1926 in association with Harper Brothers (USA), with Hodder and Stoughton (UK) named publishers of this copy on the title page, printed in the USA that same year, the imprint on the title page verso stating "copyright 1926. by Zane Grey, printed in thr USA, first ediition, G-A" . After its release ".Eldorado" was quisckly absorbed into the big- game fishing fraternity and first editions are now scarce, but sought after. As the book also covered freshwater fishing in NZ, mainly in the Taupo area, it did much to cement the country's reputation for fine fishing in that sport. Although concentrating on big game fishing (bill-fish and sharks) Grey's book also recorded his impressions of NZ genarally, praising its natural beauty, thermal wonders, other tourist attractions, its friendly folk, the Maori people. their culture and traditions, advancing NZ as a tourism location. His 1926 NZ "expedition" was by way of a reconnaisance centered on the Bay of Islands fishing waters. He followed it up with similar visits in 1927, 1929 and 1933, later shifting his angling attention to the monster sharks found in Australian waters. This Hodder and Stoughton copy (228 pages) is in excellent condition, its blue covers bright with gilt titles to front/spine and front double rules, corners lightly bumbed with light wear, also at spine base. Gilt leaping in bill-fish in circle front top right, few light marks/scratches to front board surface. Text block is excellent throughout with ink former owner name at top half-title, b/w frontis photo plate with more than 40 full page photo plates throughout, most taken by the author. A number of these are tissue protected and these sheets carry a related sketch by Frank E Phares who also contributes a large number of chapter head and tail sketches End-papers a colour-toned photo of Bay of Islands. First editions of this fisherman's favourite are rare in this top notch condition. Book weight unpacked is just oiver 1.6kg and additional postage would be required for international delivery.
