Three and a half inch closed tear on half-title page. Slightly cocked at head of spine. Most of hinge cracked at back paste down, still fully attached. Otherwise in very good condition.

Faint paint mark on spine about 2.5" long. Some soiling of boards on front and back. End papers are clean except the original book sellers stick on the bottom front end paper in the corner. Heavy foxing on frontispiece page and title page. Fore edge is unevenly cut.

The writer's fish stories describe the mental and physical demands of trying to land the largest and most numerous catches of swordfish, marlin, tuna and several other species of deep water fish. Imagine listening to story after story of fighting a three hundred pound fish for several hours only to have it break the line as it was being brought in. It was quite a departure from the typical stories of the old west. Maybe he wanted to do something different. The book does end with an essay on the importance of being environmentally conscious as one fishes the oceans. Even in 1918 when this was written there were indications that some species were becoming overfished and were in danger of disappearing altogether." (Gerald Matzke) .

Three pages were roughly opened resulting in their being torn, the title page, half title page and a page with a poem on it; and one leaf with the table of contents is missing a 1"x1"x 1" triangular top foreedge corner. Description: First edition ("F-T"). Octavo (9 1/2" x 6 1/2"). Illustrated with photographs by the author. Original 3/4 dark green morocco, now largely faded to brown, t.e.g., uncut. Very good. 267 pages. Deluxe leather bound edition, only a few copies were issued by Harper for Grey's exclusive use and never offered for sale. Signed and inscribed by Zane Grey in green ink to his brother R. C. on the front endpaper: "Hollywood, Calif-, Nov 18, 1919. To R. C. Grey who is the Reddy and the R. C. of the following pages, from his brother Zane Grey." There is an additional partial inscription by Grey of the rear endpaper. Now enclosed in a full green morocco slipcase.
