Description: Dated 1904 to copyright page but title page undated. Endpapers match Quinby Plate II (1904-1906) with hairbrush in use far right center, not Plate III or later, with their frog replacements. Thus, an early printing but not the first, as "muffatees" has here been corrected to "muffetees" on page 15. Good-plus with a taupe or khaki cloth spine covering which bears no text and is therefore probably a replacement. Previous owner's name Margaret Sinclair written in center of illustrated front free endpaper. Although Miss Sinclair does not list her address here, this is from the same collection of Miss Margaret Sinclair / Russell House / Hampstead Heath that provided our 1903 "Tailor of Gloucester" with its 1903 gift inscription. 85 pp., reduced from $152.

Helen Beatrix Potter (28 July 1866 - 22 December 1943) was an English writer, illustrator, natural scientist, and conservationist best known for her children's books featuring animals, such as those in The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Born into an upper-class household, Potter was educated by governesses and grew up isolated from other children. She had numerous pets and spent holidays in Scotland and the Lake District, developing a love of landscape, flora, and fauna, all of which she closely observed and painted. Though Potter was typical of women of her generation in having limited opportunities for higher education, her study and watercolours of fungi led to her being widely respected in the field of mycology. In her thirties, Potter self-published the highly successful children's book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Following this, Potter began writing and illustrating children's books full-time. In all, Potter wrote thirty books; the best known being her twenty-three children's tales. With the proceeds from the books and a legacy from an aunt, in 1905 Potter bought Hill Top Farm in Near Sawrey, a village in the Lake District, which at that time was in Lancashire. Over the following decades, she purchased additional farms to preserve the unique hill country landscape. In 1913, at the age of 47, she married William Heelis, a respected local solicitor from Hawkshead. Potter was also a prize-winning breeder of Herdwick sheep and a prosperous farmer keenly interested in land preservation. She continued to write and illustrate, and to design spin-off merchandise based on her children's books for British publisher Warne, until the duties of land management and her diminishing eyesight made it difficult to continue. She died of pneumonia and heart disease on 22 December 1943 at her home in Near Sawrey at the age of 77, leaving almost all her property to the National Trust. She is credited with preserving much of the land that now constitutes the Lake District National Park. Potter's books continue to sell throughout the world in many languages with her stories being retold in song, film, ballet, and animation, and her life depicted in a feature film and television film. Condition: Very Good

Description: First edition, first issue of the story of PETER RABBIT's badly-behaved cousin, and the pair's quest to retrieve Peter's lost clothes. "I sometimes feel afraid that the TAILOR and NUTKIN are rather too ingenious and complicated compared with PETER RABBIT," wrote Beatrix Potter to her publisher Norman Warne, "Don't you think the next one ought to be more simple?" (Linder, 143). Thus came THE TALE OF BENJAMIN BUNNY, Potter's fourth publication, resuming the misadventures of Peter and his family. Benjamin, named after Potter's own pet rabbit, took some of of his naughty personality from his real-life counterpart: Potter recalls how he would be "at one moment amiably sentimental to the verge of silliness, at the next. a demon, throwing himself onto his back" (Linder, 148). 5.5'' x 4''. Original light brown paper boards with color pictorial center panel and green lettering. Color decorative endpapers of other Beatrix Potter characters. Illustrated in color throughout. 86 pages. Prize inscription to half-title page, "Eva Williams / February 1905 / A Prize for English Essay." Binding with a bit of bumping to corners and spine ends, a touch of wear to boards; shallow 1" split to front joint. Binding cracked to one opening. A bright copy.
