Description: First Edition; Demy 8vo; pp. xiv, 192 (last blank); original decorated endpapers, illustrated prelim pages and half title, coloured frontispiece, tissue guard, eight other full page illustrations, numerous line drawings in text, (Illustrations by A. B. Frost and E. W. Kemble), original peach coloured cloth binding with elaborate blind stamped gilt decoration to front board, title lettered in gilt on spine and front board, binding faded on spine, name in ink on front free endpaper, otherwise a very good copy. Joel Chandler Harris (1848-1908), this book contains 26 of his Uncle Remus's stories, with the exception of the tar Baby story, they are all new to this publication of 1904 and cover a variety of humorous subjects from Adam and Eve (De Apple Tree) to Brer Rabbit's Gigglin' Place. The stories, were mostly collected directly from the African-American oral storytelling tradition, and were revolutionary in their use of dialect, animal personages, and serialized landscape.

Description: Very good first illustrated edition with pale orange ribbed cloth and stamped gilt pictorial and title on cover. Spine is only lightly tanned, with bright gilt. Slightly bumped spine bottom with some corner wear. The illustrated page preceeding the half tilte page, the half title , frontis, and title pages all ave a small tear/notch at the top edge. The author's note page, which is still uncut from the title page, is also notched. Otherwise, the book is very nice with sepia pictorial vignettes of animal characters framing the text on each page, animal characters on each Chapter head, and nine full page illustrations, including the frontis.
