This is a first printing of the first edition. Ads at the front for other books by the publisher dated January, 1852. 273 pages. Book is in fair condition. Some wear to cover, particularly along edges where cloth has split in places exposing bits of the boards beneath. Heavier wear on hinges and head and foot of spine as well. Gold stamping remains bright. A few small black spots on front cover. Corners bumped inward just a bit. Binding remains strong. Page edges toned. Fading stamp with a previous owner's name and address on front attached endpaper. Heavy foxing to two thin advertisement pages, the first of which is torn from the top edge near the gutter. A fair amount of foxing to all pages. Pages are otherwise free of marks or folds. Book is overall sturdy and in good reading condition.

Ex-library copy with a library label affixed to the front pastedown, and a card sleeve & date slip affixed to the rear end paper and pastedown. There is an inscription dated 1852 written in pen on a front end paper. The letter "H" in "Hawthorne" on the title page has 2 small underlines in pencil. Overall the book is in Good- condition.

A fine association between two important figures in 19th-century American literature. The Quaker poet and abolitionist would later be best-remembered for his 1866 work Snow-Bound. The present copy also includes a letter from Samuel T. Pickard, Whittier s nephew and eventual executor who was also the publisher of spurious excerpts from Hawthorne s diary in the 1860s.
