Green cloth cover with blind stamped decoration to front and rear. Blind stamped raised bands & compartments design to spine with gilt lettering. 9" Tall. Dedicatory page dated 1887. 2 small closed tears on sides of spine, a small piece of cloth missing from very bottom (see photo) and a little fraying to very top. Pages generally in nice, clean condition, only some light foxing to a few pages. Binding a little fragile, hinges sound. Bequest inscription on title page dated 1915. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall

Frontispiece and vignette title page plus 41 plates These include facsimiles of the original edition's plates by Phiz and Seymour, plus four plates by Buss and one by Leech, in colour, previously unpublished. A lengthy preface details the printing of the plates and accounts of previous editions. Includes Dickens's prefaces, addresses and dedication, and, at the end of Vol.2, a facsimile of of an inscription by Charles Dickens in Mr Edward Chapman's presentation copy of The Pickwick Papers, and a facsimile of the green paper wrapper of the first edition in parts. Dark green cloth with gilt pictorial decorated titles including 'Victoria Edition' on spines. Condition: Very good. Minor edgewear and rubbing to cloth. All plates etc as called for. Tissue guards all intact, the one to the frontispiece in Vol 2 is partially detached. Inscription to half title vol 1. Plate facing p314 in vol 2 [not facing p318 as in List of Plates]. Limited to two thousand copies in five hundred of which the plates are printed on Indian Paper. Volume one is illustrated with frontispiece, vignette, and twenty-eight plates. Volume two is illustrated with frontispiece, nineteen plates, a facsimile of an inscription by Charles Dickens in Mr. Edward Chapman's Presentation Copy of "The Pickwick Paper's" and a facsimile of the green wrapper to part one. Collated complete. Six of the above plates are published here for the first time, as detailed in the text. A collection of related adventure stories originally indented for serialisation in a periodical. The novel follows Samuel Pickwick, a kind and wealthy gentleman who is founder of the Pickwick Club. Along with three other members of the club, he journeys to places away from London and reports back on his findings. Written by Charles Dickens, a English writer and social critic considered one of the greatest novelists of the Victorian era. Illustrated by Robert Seymour, a British illustrator, Robert William Buss, a British Victorian artist, Hablot K. Browne, an English artist and illustrator known by his pen name of Phiz, and John Leech, an English caricaturist and illustrator. In the original green cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Minor loss to the tail of the spine of volume one and a small split to the cloth at the head of the spine of volume two. Fading to the spine and the odd mark to the board. Front hinge tender to volume one but remains firm. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are very bright with some spotting throughout. A small tear has been repaired with paper tape to page xix of volume one. Good

An extra illustrated set containing, besides the unpublished plates by Buss, "Phiz" and Leech, issued with the work, the following illustrations: A complete set of duplicate etchings (proof without letters) from the original plates; two additional plates after unpublished drawings by R.W. Buss. Of the two additional Buss plates only 50 copies of each were struck off before the plates were destroyed. Original green cloth covers and spine for both volumes bound in each respectively. Original spines read "Proof" above the words "Victoria Edition" at lower edge of backstrip. Contemporary review, circa 1888, laid-down on two blank prelim pages as prefatory note. Rebound in full red crushed morocco with five raised bands, elaborate inner dentelles, marbled endpapers and top edges gilt.
