Description: 12mo, two volumes, two inserted engraved frontispiece plates and 38 illustrations in the text after Thackeray, original green cloth, front and rear panels stamped in blind, spine panels stamped in gold, cream coated endpapers. First edition. Thackeray "made a trip to Ireland in 1842 and stayed for a time with the novelist Lever. THE IRISH SKETCH-BOOK, which annoyed the Irish very much, appeared in 1843, and in the dedication to Lever, Thackeray used his own name for the first time." - Kunitz and Haycraft (eds), British Authors of the Nineteenth Century, p. 615. Van Duzer 96. Appears to be a married set. The green cloth of volume one is a dark green cloth while volume two is a medium green cloth. Both half title leaves are present, as is the blank leaf preceding the half title leaf in volume two. The inserted frontispieces are foxed with some offset onto the title pages. Volume one is near fine. Volume two is slightly leaned, has a small label of the Leighlin Bridge Book Society affixed to the front paste-down, and has a large, but not unpleasant, damp stain to the cloth on the rear cover. Still a pleasing set. Uncommon in the original cloth. (#114150)
