A tale set in a mining town in southern Illinois about two families blasted apart by the apparent murder of one father by the other. The miraculous escape of the accused killer, John Ashley, on the eve of his execution and his flight to freedom triggers a powerful story tracing the fate of his and the victim's wife and children. At once a murder mystery and a philosophical story, The Eighth Day is a "suspenseful and deeply moving" (New York Times) work of classic stature that has been hailed as a great American epic.

Price: US$23.50 + shipping

Description: Hardcover first edition - First printing. A later novel of Wilder's - one which begins with a murder, trial and escape of the accused in a small town in Illinois in 1902, but which goes back and forth in time and place -from 1885 to 1905 - from New Jersey to St Kitts to Chile to Chicago, as it explores the causes and the consequences to the families. 435 pp. Very good in a fair only dust jacket (chipping to the edges of the dj, some dampstaining to the spine of the dj, and bleeding from the cloth, resulting in discoloration to the interior of the dj. Barely visible on the exterior, book is not affected, and so despite the flaws this is actually a decent looking copy.)

Condition: Fine

Description: "First Edition" is stated, as required; dust wrapper is price-clipped. This is a very clean, fresh and nice first printing; in fact, it's the nicest copy of The Eighth Day I've seen in a long while. An increasingly uncommon first edition in true collector's condition. A triumph of technique, The Eighth Day may be the ultimate achievement of Wilder's novelistic career - in microcosm, a story of the hundred years from 1845 to the Second World War, the novel focuses on two families in one town and the aftermath of a murder. The writing is simply wonderful, the characters exquisitely drawn, and the tale is gripping and powerfully told, without sentimentality, and completely unpredictable. The murder mystery is well-done and particularly satisfying - and those who read the book for its evocative portrayal of a bygone America and its uniquely Wilder-esque turns of phrase will be thrilled and moved. The Pulitzer Prize winning Wilder garnered the National Book Award for this effort.

Description: Inscribed by Wilder to Cheryl Crawford, "ever affectionately," and dated March 21, 1967, in New York. As with another copy of this book that was inscribed on the same day, the recipient's name is filled in in what appears to be a child's hand. Laid into this copy is a six-page typescript of Wilder's 1918 playlet "Nascuntur Poetae [Poets are Born]." The book has apparent smoke damage to the upper edges; only a fair copy, lacking the dust jacket. The typescript appears to be a carbon copy; folded in thirds; near fine. Unless otherwise noted, our first editions are first printings.

Thornton Wilder (1897-1975) was an American playwright and novelist. He won three Pulitzer Prizes for the novel The Bridge of San Luis Rey and for the plays Our Town and The Skin of Our Teeth, and a U.S. National Book Award for the novel The Eighth Day. He earned his Bachelor of Art's degree from Yale University in 1920 and earned his Master of Arts degree in French Literature from Princeton University in 1926. After graduating, Wilder went to Italy and studied archaeology and Italian. World War II saw Wilder rise to the rank of lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Air Force Intelligence, first in Africa, then in Italy until 1945. He received several awards for his military service. He went on to become visiting professor at Harvard University, where he served for a year as the Charles Eliot Norton professor. Wilder had a wide circle of friends, including writers Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Zelda Fitzgerald, Toklas, Jean-Peal Sartre, and Stein; actress Ruth Gordon; fighter Gene Tunney; and socialite Sibyl, Lady Colefax. The author inscribed this work to Henry Ten Eyck Perry (1890-1973) and his wife, Elizabeth Ten Eyck Perry (nee Elizabeth McAfee, 1888-1976). Ten Eyck was a native of Albany, New York, as well as a writer and professor of English Literature. He graduated from Yale University in 1912 & received his Doctorate from Harvard in 1918. He published a number of books and taught English at the University of Buffalo. There is a poem written by Robert Frost which is inscribed to the couple entitled The Minor Bird. Henry Ten Eyck interacted with another major American poet; T.S. Eliot wrote in a letter from December 26, 1932 that he was to visit "Buffallo or is it Buffalo Bufallo Bufaloo to stay with Professor Henry Ten Eyck Perry." Ten married Elizabeth, which led to her involvement with the University of Buffalo. She founded and was acting president to the Women's Club in 1946. An incredibly interesting and accomplished couple. Gift quality. Presents well.

WILDER, Thornton. The Eighth Day [Inscribed Association Copy]. Harper, NY, 1967.

Price: US$1500.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: The three-time Pulitzer Prize-winning (Our Town, The Skin of Our Teeth, The Bridge of San Luis Rey) author's National Book Award winning novel. Inscribed by the author: "For JEAN and WALTER with deep regard and affection ever/ Thornton/ March 21, 1967." As with at least three other copies of this title that Wilder inscribed, the recipients' names are in large block letters, while the bulk of the inscription is in Wilder's small cursive. We do know that Wilder was in New York on the date of this signing, and that he had reason to behold the Pulitzer Prize-winning critic Walter Kerr and his wife, the writer Jean Kerr (of Please Don't Eat the Daisies fame) with deep regard and affection: Walter Kerr lauded Wilder's work repeatedly in the 1960s, from his off-Broadway work ("the very special voice of Thornton Wilder.the homely, jaunty, gently poetic sound of it."), to the cultural phenomenon that was Hello, Dolly!, which was based on Wilder's The Matchmaker. Fine in a fine dust jacket. A gorgeous, inscribed copy of a National Book Award winner. Unless otherwise noted, our first editions are first printings.

WILDER, Thornton. THE EIGHTH DAY INSCRIBED TO AARON COPLAND. Harper & Row (1967), New York, 1967.

Price: US$6250.00 + shipping

Description: Copy #5 of 500 numbered and SIGNED copies of this National Book Award winner. In addition to being signed on the limitation page, the author has INSCRIBED this copy on both the title page and the blank page facing it to composer Aaron Copland: "Presented to Aaron Copland on/the occasion of the tribute paid/to him on his 70th birthday by/the friends of the MacDowell/Colony/T.N.W." On the title page: "For Aaron/from/Thornton/with a long admiration and/indebtedness and affection./October 1970." Wilder has drawn a red box around "Aaron" and a blue box around "Thornton" with colored pencils. Copland, one of America's greatest composers and celebrators of the American spirit, had much in common with Wilder regarding themes and subjects. Copland composed the music for the 1940 film adaptation of OUR TOWN, for which he was nominated for two Academy Awards. The film itself was nominated for six Oscars, including Best Picture, but did not win any. After first meeting with Copland to discuss the project, Wilder said of him, "He's a very likeable fella." Wilder wrote most of OUR TOWN at the MacDowell Colony where Copland also wrote much of his masterwork, APPALACHIAN SPRING. An Association Copy of the first magnitude. Mild sunning to the spine. Still Fine in glassine and slipcase, as issued
