"The Corwin was a steamer belonging to the US Treasury Department that sailed the waters of Alaska protecting US interests at sea-otter hunting grounds. For its June 1881 voyage it was charged with making inquiries into the fate of the three vessels and rendering appropriate aid. The Corwin was sent out partly as a relief expedition for the Jeannette and two missing whaling vessels, Mount Wallaston and Vigilant. Jeannette, commanded by Commander George W. De Long, had sailed to the Bering Strait in 1879 to explore the Arctic Ocean, but went missing. Corwin was commanded by Captain C. L. Hooper, and the cruise went to the Arctic Ocean along Northwest Alaska. By Hooper’s invitation, John Muir accompanied the voyage. Muir studied and wrote about the glaciation of the region and its vegetation. He collected plants at many locations on the coasts of Alaska and Siberia, and on St. Lawrence, Wrangell, and Herald Islands" (from the Smithsonian website)

John Muir. The Cruise of the Corwin. Limited, large-paper edition.. Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston, 1917.

Price: US$350.00 + shipping

Description: 8vo; 279 pp. Hand-colored frontis and black and white photos. Copy No, 129 of 550. A square tight copy with unmarked text. Green papered covered boards over green cloth, gilt lettered leather spine label. A very fresh copy with minimal rubbing to tail of spine. The rear panel is problematic; it appears to be a bit soiled, perhaps caused by binder's glue bleeding through and book's subsequent contact with a darker object. The panel is not scuffed, but rather rubbed slightly. Otherwise the book appears to have not been read, and opened only for the previous owners to apply their bookmarks, and for one of those owners to also note on the fly, 'This narrative is one of John Muir's earliest. Chiefly written from his diaries-of the North'. This note, beautifully hand-written, was made by Lucretia Thatcher Perry Osborn, who along with her husband, Henry Fairfield Osborn, were great friends and benefactors of John Muir, Henry accompanying Muir on his fifth trip to Alaska (1896), and the couple accommodating him at their summer retreat on the Hudson River, Muir editing the final proofs for 'Yosemite' at a cabin set up by his friends, and later named for him. The book, lacking the exceedingly rare dj, is now protected in a removable mylar cover.

Price: US$750.00 + shipping

Description: First edition, large paper copy, one of five hundred and fifty copies, this is number 272. Octavo, original cloth. Edited by William Frederic Badà . Illustrated with plates from photographs and from sketches by Muir. In near fine condition. Kimes 348; BAL 14775 On July 8, 1879, the USS Jeanette departed San Francisco for the Bering Strait with the intention of finding a route to the North Pole. With the ship crushed by the pressure of the ice, its captain, George W. De Long, and twenty of its crew never made it back to America. The federal government called upon her captain, Calvin L. Hooper, to venture northwards and find out what happened to the USS Jeanette and the missing men. Built out of the finest Oregon fir, fastened with copper, galvanized iron, and locust-tree nails, the Corwin was the perfect ship for Arctic exploration where her sturdy sailing qualities were to prove of the utmost importance. John Muir, Scottish naturalist and explorer, sensing the possibilities of science and adventure in the exploration of this unknown Arctic land, immediately made himself available for the Corwin’s expedition. During the cruise Muir kept a daily record of his experiences and observations, these along with the numerous letters he wrote form the basis of this fascinating account. As well as describing the day by day events of the Corwin in its search for any survivors of the Jeanette, Muir also recorded his encounters with Alaskan natives, describing how they survived this brutal environment. He drew upon his experience as a naturalist to beautifully capture the flora and fauna of this landscape.
