Cloth volumes have light wear to spine ends & corners, one bumped upper corner, some offsetting to the 15 photogravures. Gilt lettering and designs to both panels and spines, top edges gilt. A classic of American literature, originally published in 1858, a series of articles starting in the first issue of the Atlantic Monthly magazine. Holmes lived from (1809-1894 ), was the father of the more famous Oliver Wendell Holmes (Jr.). He was mainly a physician and a polymath, friends with Emerson, Longfellow and James Russell Lowell. Description: 1894 on the title page; 1893 on the copyright page so this is apparently a later printing of this then-newly illustrated edition. This is Volume 2 only of a two-volume set. 474 pp. Frontispiece and 27 other illustrations by Howard Pyle, with tissue guards. TEG. Bound in a russet-colored cloth with simulated devices from medieval book styles in a manner characteristic of a number of books by H-M's book designer, Sarah Whitman. There are three simulated clasps in gold that wrap around the spine to each cover. The title in Whitman's lettering is decorated and placed near the very edge of the cover and also appears in a similar position on the rear cover. The spine lettering is also in gold. This copy has a very light discoloration across part of the top of the front cover, possibly from sun-fading although not obviously so. Other than this defect, this copy is in fine condition and a beautiful example of Whitman's characteristic elegance.

Davis Over his 35-year career, Pyle carved a reputation for himself as one of America's most significant illustrators. He produced more than 3,000 illustrations for books and magazines, twenty books, and several articles. Pyle began as a children's book illustrator, and established new standards in American book-making with his designs, with William Morris among one of his numerous fans. Pyle was notably famous for his illustrations about pirates and historical adventure stories. He illustrated books by Robert Louis Stevenson, Oliver Wendell Holmes, and William Dean Howells. A nice copy of Holmes' literary masterpiece, made livelier with Pyle's designs. A touch of age darkening to the spines with volume one's spine showing a few flecks of white; leaves show mild foxing.

Description: Two volumes, both books in very good plus condition. Tera-cotta cloth covered boards with gilt lettering and designs on front and back covers and spines. Upper page edges are gilt. Complete with frontispieces, full page photogravures and illustrations. Boards are clean and text is clear. Spines and uppermost board edges are darkened. Upper edges at head of spine are rubbed with the beginnings of fraying: Vol I has three tiny closed vertical tears, one at the back corner, the other two closer to the front corner; half of the upper-most edge at head of spine on Vol II is separated beginning at the back corner. Upper edge of back panel on Vol II has a small indent - see photo. Lower edges at tail of spine are scuffed but not frayed or rubbed through. Minimal scuffs at fore-edge corner tips. Previous owner's bookplates on both front paste-downs. Front free end paper on Vol II has 3/8" closed vertical tear along the lower edge with adjacent diagonal crease. Both back paste-downs have residue of book-seller's label in the lower left corners. Please use close-up options for best inspection and in support of condition description.
