T E Lawrence. T.E. Lawrence to His Biographer Liddell Hart T.E. Lawrence to His Biographer Robert Graves. Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc, New York, 1938.

Price: US$832.56 + shipping

Description: Two volumes of correspondence between Thomas Lawrence 'Of Arabia' and his biographers. Complete in two volumes. This book is a limited edition. Each volume is signed, one by Robert Graves and the other by Liddell Hart. In the original unclipped dustwrappers, and in the original slipcase. These two volumes contain the letters the Thomas Lawrence exchanged with his biographers, Liddell Hart and Robert Graves, whilst they were each in the process of writing their biographies. These letters answer questions posed by the biographers, and offer an interesting look at the man beyond the biographies. Thomas Lawrence became famous in his lifetime for his role during the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War, earning him the nickname "Lawrence of Arabia". During his life he published "Seven Pillars of Wisdom", an account of his experiences during the First World War. He"s alleged to have embellished a lot of details in "Pillars", though it still offers as an informative memoir about the war. He also translated some novels during his time, included "The Forest Giant", originally written in French by Adrien Le Corbeau", and "The Odyssey of Homer", originally in Greek. Lawrence has been immortalised in the 1962 film "Lawrence of Arabia", in which he is portrayed by Peter O"Toole. In the original slipcase, the publisher"s original cloth binding, and the original unclipped dust wrappers. Externally, smart. The "Graves" volume has light spotting to the rear board, very light spotting to the front board, and a little discolouration to the spine. The "Liddell" edition as light discolouration to the joints, spine, and to the tops of the boards. Offsetting to the pastedowns, to the recto of the front endpaper, and to the verso of the rear endpaper of both volumes. Each volume"s dust wrappers have some fading to the flyleaves due to sunning, and fading and marking to the spine. The "Liddell" volume has a closed tear to the top of the joint on the rear flyleaf. The slipcase is smart, with slight edge wear, with a crack to the top of the rear, resulting in some lifting, with further cracks to the rear at the joints and the bottom. Discolouration to the boards due to sunning, with the odd spot to the rear board. Internally, both volumes are firmly pages. Pages to both volumes are bright and clean throughout. Very Good Indeed

Lawrence, T.E.. T.E. Lawrence to his Biographers Robert Graves & Liddell Hart. Two Volumes.. Doubleday Doran, 1938.

Price: US$995.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: This two volume set of Lawrence's letters to his two biographers is limited to 500 sets for sale in the US . Original slipcase is present with some signs of wear toning. The Robert Graves volume is signed by Graves; The Liddell Hart volume is signed by Hart. Both volumes are Near Fine, top edges gilt, with a previous owner's name penciled on the front pastedown in Very Good plus dust jackets with age darkening to the spines; offsetting to the front panel of the Hart volume and to the rear panel of the Graves volume. The letters from Lawrence to Graves and Hart concern both private matters and question-and-answer aspects about Lawrence's Middle East campaign and his mammoth survey of the subject, the famous Seven Pillars. The Graves book attempts comments on Lawrence's "chameleon-like character". Lawrence himself offers, in many playfully profound passages, a sometimes stunning self-analysis, but generally he seems to "love" his legend- and he was a legend then just as much as he is now. He says: "I'd wish every man to be an everlasting question mark". The Hart book is more factual, brimming with blueprint recapitulations of the battles and machinations, both political and military, behind the Arab Revolt. No, neither book solves the enigma of the Mystery Man of Mecca, but almost every page offers entertaining and endless "clues".
