Description: A presentation copy of Symbolic Logic, Part 1 in v good condition. Dodgson donated presentation copies of this mathematical work to Wigan Free Library and the Linen Hall Library in Belfast. (Williams, Madan, Green and Crutch 270). Symbolic Logic was intended to consist the three parts, Elementary, Advanced and Transcendental is an attempt to popularize Formal Logic and accuracy of thought. This third edition contains the preface dated 20 July 1896. Original brown cloth boards lettered in black on the front cover. Rubbed and soiled covers with lightly darkened spine, minimal edge wear. Library bookplate to the front paste down. "Withdrawn" stamp plus contemporary librarian cataloguing note on ffp. Blue ink presentation inscription by the publisher to the half title reading, "Presented by the Author for the use of Free Public Library Wigan". Embossed library stamp of Wigan Free Public Library to the lower corners of the half title, frontpiece, title page and first and last leaf of the main text. Purple ink library stamp to the title verso. Contents are clean. Addendum slip tipped in before Bk 1. 8vo

Not located in "Dodgson at Auction" David George Ritchie (1853-1903) was a Scottish philosopher who was a fellow of Jesus College, Oxford before becoming a tutor at Balliol College. in 1894 he left Oxford having been elected Professor of Logic and Metaphysics at St. Andrews. He must have been at St. Andrews by the time that Carroll inscribed this book to him.
