Williams, Tennessee. Sweet Bird of Youth" (in Esquire: The Magazine for Men, issue of April 1959). Esquire, Inc., Chicago, 1959.

Price: US$45.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: [moderately worn, short separation of front cover at bottom of spine (less than one inch), miscellaneous minor creasing to covers]. (B&W/color illustrations, ads, etc.) The highlight of the issue is the first publication of the Williams play. (The original Broadway production, starring Paul Newman and Geraldine Page, had only just opened in March, and the New Directions hardcover edition of the play wasn't published until December.) A small-print notice informs us that "this is the author's original working script and is subject to production changes." Another significant piece contained in this issue is a frank assessment by Richard H. Rovere of John F. Kennedy's Presidential prospects, entitled "Kennedy's Last Chance to be President." Also of interest: a cartoony pictorial essay (by Harvey Kurtzman, of all people) about a visit to Ireland by James Cagney; an article by Sybille Bedford about the 1957 murder trial of Dr. John Bodkin Adams, a sort of condensed version of her book "The Trial of Dr. Adams"; an article looking into the newest advances in the area of genetics; and book reviews by Dorothy Parker, who finds much to admire in three novels, including Romain Gary's "Lady L," and in Ms. Bedford's book about the Adams trial. Description: FIRST EDITION INSCRIBED. 1 vol., hardcover, with the DJ, not price clipped, inscribed by Tennessee on the front blank endleaf "for Lanford Love "Ariadne"", with Lanford Wilson's stamp to the upper left corner, VG/VG. Ariadne is a character in Tennessee Williams' work - Adam and Eve on a Ferry. Lanford Wilson's copy. Lanford developed an interest in acting and performed in his high school plays, including the role of Tom in The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams which is when he said "was then I fell in love with theater". Lanford said he remembers the first time he met Tennessee Williams in the early 1960's although he'd prefer not to. In 1969, Lanford was hired for $5,000 to adapt Tennessee Williams' short story One Arm, about a male hustler, into a screenplay. The day after he finished the screenplay, he was invited to a preview of Midnight Cowboy, and after seeing the film thought 'there went that idea down the drain'". Lanford went on to write the Pulitzer Prize-winning play “The Rimers of Eldritch.”

WILLIAMS, Tennessee. [Publisher's Galleys]: Sweet Bird of Youth. New Directions, [New York, 1959.

Price: US$4500.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: A collection of galleys of the first edition of the Tennessee Williams' *Sweet Bird of Youth* from the collection of Edwin Erbe, former publicity director for New Directions. The galleys are composed of both narrow tall folio pages with long unbroken text and oblong folio sheets with each containing four pages. All with printed rectos only, and one composed on onion skin sheets. A bit of wear at the edges of some sheets, a few of small isolated dampstains, and a couple sheets trimmed by the printer, near fine. A group of three in-house galleys of the first edition of this Williams play, first published by New Directions. The galleys have a few of corrections and scattered printer's note, such as the late addition of a stage manager credit. These three complete galleys are accompanied by two additional partial galleys. The original Broadway production of Williams's play about a gigolo and drifter who returns to his hometown as the traveling companion of a faded film star was directed by Elia Kazan and starred Paul Newman and Geraldine Page. All surviving galleys from this era are scarce with only a handful of copies being produced. We have not encountered other such copies and considering the source, suspect this represent all that survive.
