Description: First edition, second reprint. In a red cloth hardcover with gilt titles to spine and gilt and blue crest to spine and front. No dust jacket. 207 pp. with numerous plates and line drawings. The book is in good condition with just minor shelf-wear to the extremities of the cover and heavy sunning of the spine. The hinges are cracked and the binding a little slack. There is offsetting to the feps and a little damage to the fore edge of the ffep. There is light foxing to the fore edge and very occasional minor spots on the pages. Otherwise the pages are clean and unmarked.

Otherwise good condition. Illustrated by coloured frontispiece and by numerous full page and vignette drawings in text. Delightful work, full of fine drawings by Donald Maxwell (1877-1936). The greater part of the book relates to Kent and Sussex, including smuggling, vineyards, the reconstruction of Watling Street for modern traffic, the Wealden cloth industry and the North Kent cement industry. Other chapters are concerned with the improvements to the Great West Road, the New River in London and the Essex silk and Surrey iron industries.
