Atwood, Margaret. Surfacing [1st Printing]. McClelland & Stewart, Toronto, M&S, 1972.

Price: US$35.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: 1st printing of the first Canadian hardcover edition of the author's first novel. Grey cloth boards with gold titles and white endpapers. A tight copy with sharp corners. Ghost of pencil erasure at top edge of ffep. Previous owner's brief gift inscription in blue ink at the top edge of the page facing the half-title page (the reverse side of the ffep). The gold titles along the spine are bright and the exposed page edges are clean. The 1st issue jacket is price intact. Tanning to the spine with very minor fading of the titles. Tanning is less visible along the front fold. Softening, wrinkles and minor losses at the heel and crown of the jacket's spine. A more significant loss at the top corner of the front panel, at the fore-edge. The B&W author photograph on the back panel shows wear along the back fold, and there is softening and a minor loss at the top edge of that fold. Two tiny closed tears in the top edge of the front panel and one along the top edge of the back panel. A small food stain in the middle of the front panel is mostly obscured by the black type of Novel and Margaret. The book is unaffected. Two small, closed punctures in the back panel along the spine. And there is an unobtrusive black stain at the foot of the letter M in the publisher's logo, at the heel of the jacket's spine. The book is unaffected. Canadian buyer will be charged GST.

Atwood, Margaret. Survival: A Thematic Guide to Canadian Literature [Signed 1st Printing / 1st State]. Anansi, Toronto, 1972.

Price: US$200.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: 1st printing of the first Canadian hardcover edition SIGNED by Atwood on the title page with a black ballpoint pen. NOTE: Atwood no longer participates in autograph sessions. This is the scarcely found first state of the hardcover edition printed by Web Offset Limited in 1972 and with no review blurbs on the back panel of the jacket and blank flaps. (The 2nd issue printed by T.H. Best is more commonly found.) A well-preserved copy, this example of Survival is square and tight with sharp corners and bears no previous owner's markings. Ghost of pencil erasure at top edge of ffep. Tanning to the page edges typical of this edition. The jacket is not priced, as issued. A few scuffs to the black front panel. There is a short, horizontal tear to the spine of the jacket which has resulted in minor loss of paper. There is a tear and associated creases in the bottom corner of the front panel, and a previous owner has reinforced the inside of the jacket at that point with a short piece of scotch tape. Typical wear to the heel and crown of the jacket's spine, and there is wear and softening of the bottom edge of the back panel. Collectors consider Survival to be a companion piece to Atwood's first novel, Surfacing, which was published in the same year (Toronto: McClelland & Stewart, 1972). That's because the novel illustrates some of the themes she discusses in Survival. In the Preface, Atwood writes that the book "outlines a number of key patterns" in an effort to distinguish Canadian literature from other literatures. Canadian orders will be charged GST.

Atwood, Margaret. SURFACING - INSCRIBED TO PAMELA FRY. McClelland and Stewart Limited, Toronto, 1972.

Price: US$1750.00 + shipping

Description: First Impression. Octavo (22cm); grey paper-covered boards, with titles stamped in gilt on spine; dustjacket; [6],7-192pp. Inscribed by Atwood on the title page to her editor, Pamela Fry: "For Pam Fry / my very splendid editor / with love / Peggy Atwood." Spine ends gently nudged, hint of sunning to upper and lower board edges, else a clean, Near Fine copy. Dustjacket is unclipped (priced $6.95), with gentle sunning to spine, and some pinpoint wear to corner tips; Near Fine. A distinguished copy of Atwood's second novel, touching on themes of gender identity, environmental conservation, and Canadian nationalism. Fry (1917-?) was employed at McClelland and Stewart from 1965-1971, working closely with Farley Mowat, Sinclair Ross, and Ernest Buckler. Significantly, she served as the editor for Atwood's debut, The Edible Woman (1969), as well as Surfacing, before taking a position with the federal government. An uncommonly good and early association copy.
