Butler Leacock, FRSC, was a Canadian teacher, political scientist, writer, and humorist. Between the years 1915 and 1925, he was the best-known English-speaking humorist in the world. He is known for his light humour along with criticisms of people's follies. First Canadian issue. Based on sheets of the actual First Edition in London. 'Bell & Cockburn' imprint, the Canadian Puyblisher, to the foot of the spine. 264pp, colour frontispuiece by Cyrus Cuneo. Bond in red cloth with gilt titles. Spine a little sun-faded. Pages are bright white. Interior is unmarked. Hinges are sound. Red cloth is clean shown only very slight wear to the corner tips. Wear to the head of the spine where pulled.

Description: First Edition (first printing). 8vo. xii, 264pp. Probably a library binding of green cloth lettered and ruled in gold at the spine and with the advertisement leaves excised. Just a hint of wear to the cloth extremities, a little browning to the free endpapers and a little occasional marginal blemishing here and there. Former owner name inked to the front free endpaper, and a tiny W.H.Smith Library plate to the base of the rear pastedown, but no other indications of institutional ownership (this unrecorded green cloth binding aside). A very good copy. A classic of Canadian humour: twelve stories set in the fictional town of Mariposa, expanded from a sequence of short literary pieces originally serialised in the 'Montreal Daily Star' between February-June 1912.

Butler Leacock (1869–1944) was a Canadian teacher, political scientist, and renowned humorist. From 1915 to 1925, he held the title of the best-known English-speaking humorist globally, famous for his light humor and critiques of human folly. One of his enduring classics is "Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town," a collection of stories first published in 1912. Originally serialized in the Montreal Daily Star from February to June 1912, Leacock reworked and compiled them into the book, which was released on August 9, 1912. The work is considered a cornerstone of Canadian humorous literature.
