WILLIAMS, Tennessee. Suddenly Last Summer. New Directions, New York, 1958.

Price: US$579.72 + shipping

Description: 8vo, pp. 90. Original brown boards, lettered in silver to spine. Illustrated dustwrapper. A fine copy in a near fine dustwrapper with just a little age-toning. First edition. A one-act play, first performed off-Broadway in 1958 alongside Something Unspoken under the collective title Garden District (which explains the reference on the dustwrapper). A film version starring Elizabeth Taylor, Katherine Hepburn and Montgomery Clift was made in 1959, from which all references to homosexuality had to be removed. The screenplay was adapted by Gore Vidal who, having radically altered Williams's original text, then criticised director Joseph Mankiewicz for changing his third act. Meanwhile Clift, in the depths of addiction and incapable of remembering his lines, was incapable of long takes and had to be filmed a line at a time. Mankeiewicz tried to have him replaced; Hepburn defended him and came to despise Mankiewicz. The whole production was as highly-strung and febrile as a Tennessee Williams play -- the very thing it had ceased to be the moment Hollywood got its hands on it. A splendid copy of the original text.
