Jasper, Theodore. Ornithology; Or, The Science Of Birds. From the Text of Dr. Brehm, with Two Hundred and Twelve Illustrations. Jacob. H. Studer & Co, Columbus, OH, 1878.

Price: US$200.00 + shipping

Description: 3/4 Leather with five raised bands. iv, pp. 1-156, followed by plates A-D, and plates 1-37. There are also tipped-in at the rear two plates by Audubon: White Headed Eagle, and Purple Grackle, both of which are exquisitely colored. An odd volume, apparently. Spine title is "Birds of North America", then in a lower compartment says "Vol. II Ornithology" no other marks. Probably a less well-known companion book to "Studer's Popular Ornithology: The Birds of North America", which might have been volume 1. The Audubon Plates are bound in at the rear and measure about 11.15" x 14.5". The book measures 12" x 15" and is quite attractive by itself. All plates native to this volume are tissue-guarded. Another bookseller (MW Books) has presented this explanation for this volume: Originally issued in 40 pts. On completion pts. 1-39 were divided, the first 4 p. of each pt. and all text of pt. 40 were bound to form one volume; the last 4 p. of pts. 1-39 and extra indexes, etc., from pt. 40, were bound to form THIS volume. The origin of the two Audubon prints is unknown, and the Purple Grackle is glued to the inside of the rear cover, and has begun to tear in the middle section where someone (other than myself.) tried to remove it. VG, piece missing from top of title partially obliterating the word Ornithology (Ornit.)

Jasper, Theodore and Jacob H. Studer. Studer's Popular Ornithology: The Birds of North America. Jacob H. Studer & Co, Columbus, OH, 1878.

Price: US$300.00 + shipping

Description: Red library buckram. 182 pp with 119 interleaved, tissue-guarded color lithographed plates, preceded (before the title page) by an extensive index of 8pp. Gilt page edges. It seems as if this first printing from 1878 has the superior presentation of color plates compared to the later editions. Overall VG-. Some wear to cloth, including some ripping at top of spine. Ex-library, with bookplate, perforated and ink stamps on title page, and ink stamp on bottom page edges. Some tissue guards folded. Plate 3 is missing a corner (only affects margin, not image). A set of pages near the end is folded at the corner, with the crease most extreme on p 167, Plates are clean and intact.

Jasper, Theodore and Jacob H. Studer. Studer's Popular Ornithology: The Birds of North America. Jacob H. Studer & Co, Columbus, OH, 1878.

Price: US$395.00 + shipping

Description: Sturdy black library buckram. 182 pp with 119 interleaved, tissue-guarded color lithographed plates, preceded (before the title page) by an extensive index of 8pp. "Ornithology; Or, the Science of Birds" was also published by Studer in 1878. It seems as if these two volumes were intended to form a set, based on what I see in other entries and descriptions, but this is definitely the better-known half. It also seems as if this first printing from 1878 has the superior presentation of color plates compared to the later editions. Overall VG, with the notable and large exception of the circular ink ownership stamp on every single color plate. Ink stamp to top and bottom of text block. Sold as a reference copy only, not as a collectible book.

Studer, Jacob H.. The Birds of North America; and, Ornithology: Or The Science of Birds.. Two volumes, Columbus, Ohio: Jacob H. Studer & Co., 1878, 1878.

Price: US$575.00 + shipping

Description: Two volumes, Columbus, Ohio: Jacob H. Studer & Co., 1878. First editions, issued as "Studer's Popular Ornithology". Publisher's three-quarter brown leather, lettered and decorated in gilt, and lighter brown leather boards, elaborately decorated in gilt, all edges gilt. Both volumes are entitled "The Birds of North America". Volume I: "Drawn and colored from life by Theodore Jasper, A.M., M.D., one hundred and nineteen colored plates (inserted chromolithographs, with tissue guards) representing upwards of seven hundred different species and varieties of North American birds, including a popular account of their habits and characteristics." Inserted plates with tissue guards, 182 pages of text, with two indexes (common names and scientific names). Volume II: "From the text of Dr. Brehm, with two hundred and twelve illustrations (on 39 inserted duotone plates, typically several birds per plate, with tissue guards) by Theodore Jasper, A.M., M.D.", 156 pages of text. Dr. Brehm was probably the German Alfred Edmund Brehm, a zoologist and zoo-keeper who wrote "The Life of Birds", 1861. This volume II, "The Science of Birds", does not limit discussion to the birds of North America. Both volumes collate complete. Large and very heavy volumes, 15 inches tall x 11 1/2 wide. Leather with some abrasions, especially on the fore-corners, front and back, of V.I. Both rubbed at spine edges and tips. The binding perfectly sound. A little light foxing to a minority of plates, pictures sent upon request. Extra postage will be required. A Very Good copy.

The second book was also published by Studer in 1878. It seems as if these two volumes were intended to form a set, based on what I see in other entries and descriptions. It also seems as if this first printing from 1878 has the superior presentation of color plates compared to the later editions. Get this one as a superb reference set. Overall VG, with the notable and large exception of the blindstamps on every single color plate. Ink stamp to top and bottom of text block. Sold as a reference copy only, not as a collectible book. Overall the blindstamps are quite well hidden in the background and not noticable upon the initial viewing of the plates. Most have to be examined in detail before even seeing these blindstamps.

STUDER, Jacob Henry (1840-1904). Studer's Popular Ornithology: The Birds of North America. Columbus, OH: Jacob H. Studer, 1878 (but, 1874-78), 1878.

Price: US$2800.00 + shipping

Description: Folio, (14 1/3 x 11 inches). Fine lithographed frontispiece, 118 lithographed plates, tissue guards present (one or two spots). Original publisher's full brown calf, the front cover elaborately decorated and lettered in gilt, the spine in six compartment with five raised bands, gilt-lettered in two and decorated in the rest, gilt inner dentelles, all edges gilt (rebacked to style, corners repaired). First book edition. With 119 consecutively number plates depicting over 700 species and varieties of American birds. Jacob Henry Studer was a printer, lithographer, painter, and popular ornithologist active in Columbus, Ohio from the 1860s to the 1880s. A member of the American Ornithologists' Union, Studer arranged the birds in this book according to that group's classification scheme. Known as "the poor man's Audubon," this was the first large-format illustrated bird identification book that was affordable for a wider audience. It is fitting, therefore, that the medium employed was lithography, "the democratic art." The plates were made from drawings by Theodore Jasper (1814-1897), a portrait painter and photographic colorist who was active in New York and Connecticut from the 1840s to the 1860s, and in Columbus, Ohio from c. 1866 to 1883. A very attractive copy. Nissen 473.
