Description: The Boots edition of the tales of Arabian Nights retold by Laurence Housman, illustrated with lovely colour plates by Edmund Dulac. The Boots edition of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding, with pictorial gilt to the front board. Illustrated with a colour frontispiece and nineteen further plates in colour, all by Edmund Dulac (1882-1953). Collated, complete. Dulac was a notable illustrator, who also designed the postage stamps that heralded the beginning of Queen Elizabeth II's reign. This wonderfully illustrated edition of 'Stories from the Arabian Nights', also known as 'One Thousand and One Nights', contains a collection of Middle Eastern folk tales. These tales were first compiled in the Islamic Golden Age, and gained popularity in the western world. They tell the story of a vizier's daughter who weaves dramatic tales for a Sasanian king so that he won't have her executed. The tales that she recounts include 'Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves', 'Sinbad the Sailor', and 'Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp'. Laurence Housman (1865-1959) was an English playwright and illustrator during the Victorian era. He gained significant literary success from works such as 'An Englishwoman's Love-Letters' and 'Victoria Regina'. Housman also contributed to the Suffrage movement in England by creating banners and propaganda through the 'Suffrage Atelier', which he founded, and writing in women's newspapers. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, fairly smart, with some marks to the boards and light shelf wear to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean except for offsetting to the first and last couple of pages. Very Good
