Contents are complete and clean with slight offsetting from the plate pages to the opposing text and the occasional spot (eg the gutter of p 49) or light mark. Page edges are quite soft and have some toning as do the free endpapers. There is a stain and some fading from an old sellotape repair across p 53 (sellotape removed - and tear professionally repaired), and a couple of further small paper repairs. There is the outline of a pressed flower on the blank part of p 154.

Description: Please email for Photographs or further information. Very Good - Please see photos as part of condition report 1911 1st Edition , STORIES FROM HANS ANDERSON By Hans Anderson Hans Christian Andersen (2 April 1805 – 4 August 1875) was a Danish author. Although a prolific writer of plays, travelogues, novels, and poems, he is best remembered for his literary fairy tales. Andersen's fairy tales, consisting of 156 stories across nine volumes, have been translated into more than 125 languages. They have become culturally embedded in the West's collective consciousness, readily accessible to children but presenting lessons of virtue and resilience in the face of adversity for mature readers as well. His most famous fairy tales include "The Emperor's New Clothes", "The Little Mermaid", "The Nightingale", "The Steadfast Tin Soldier", "The Red Shoes", "The Princess and the Pea", "The Snow Queen", "The Ugly Duckling", "The Little Match Girl", and "Thumbelina". His stories have inspired ballets, plays, and animated and live-action films. Illustrated By: Edmund Dulac Edmund Dulac (born Edmond Dulac; 22 October 1882 – 25 May 1953) was a French-British naturalised magazine illustrator, book illustrator and stamp designer. He then became a regular contributor to The Pall Mall Magazine, and joined the London Sketch Club, which introduced him to the foremost book and magazine illustrators of the day. Through these he began an association with the Leicester Galleries and Hodder & Stoughton; the gallery commissioned illustrations from Dulac which they sold in an annual exhibition, while publishing rights to the paintings were taken up by Hodder & Stoughton for reproduction in illustrated gift books, publishing one book a year. Books produced under this arrangement by Dulac include Stories from The Arabian Nights (1907) with 50 colour images; an edition of William Shakespeare's The Tempest (1908) with 40 colour illustrations; The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam (1909) with 20 colour images; The Sleeping Beauty and Other Fairy Tales (1910); Stories from Hans Christian Andersen (1911); The Bells and Other Poems by Edgar Allan Poe (1912) with 28 colour images and many monotone illustrations; and Princess Badoura (1913). The previous owner, Amanda Severne (1954-2008) of Shakenhurst Hall, Cleobury Mortimer, was herself a book illustrator and also worked in the animation business. She was a "key renderer" on Raymond Briggs's 1982 animated version of The Snowman. A review of the illustrated books of 1911 published in Art and Literature (December 1911) found one reviewer stating "in certain qualities of fantasy and delicate strength, and lurid, imaginative daring, Mr Rackham and Mr Pogany are. inimitable, but for sheer grace and poetry of feeling I am inclined to give the palm to Mr Edmund Dulac. I doubt if Mr Dulac has ever done better work as a book-illustrator than he has put into the series of colour-plates with which he has illustrated Hans Andersen.". The reviewer in the Saturday Review of Politics, Literature, Science and Art (10 December 1911) stated simply that this was "a really beautiful book, with illustrations of exceptional merit. As pictures for children nothing could be more attractive than Mr Dulac's watercolour drawings". Hughey 27a. Quarto. Edition de Luxe, limited to 100 numbered copies printed on Japanese Vellum and signed by the artist, this copy being no. 20. Large quarto (12 1/8 x 9 3/4 inches; 309 x 249 mm.). viii, 250, [2] pp. Mounted color frontispiece, with descriptive tissue guard printed in black, and twenty-seven mounted color plates (included in pagination). Plates framed with thick pale green line border and accompanied by guard leaves printed in pale green with stylized pineapples on the recto and border of snowflakes above descriptive caption on the verso. Text pages with pale green snowflake borders at top and bottom. All leaves framed with double pale green lines. Original dark chocolate brown pigskin pictorially stamped with three-peacock design and lettered in gilt on front cover and spine, with Hodder & Stoughton gilt-stamped at spine foot. Top edge gilt, others uncut. Endpapers printed in pale green with repeated design of stylized peacocks. A stunning copy, unique, and arguably the finest copy of the De Luxe Edition. The binding and endpapers do not conform to Hughey's description, and appear to be unique to this handsome copy. As she notes, the pigskin binding, ("brandy colour," not dark chocolate-brown, as here), should only have two thin gilt rules as frame, gilt lettering, date 1911 on spine, and white endpapers, not illustrated as here and in the trade edition. We contacted her for insight. Having seen only two copies of the Edition De Luxe, William Randolph Hearst's and another viewed at a Washington book fair, she reports: "So, where does your copy fit in? And when was it bound? I tend to think it was done close to original printing time, November 1911. There were a lot of oddball copies done then. The title was sold very quickly - all sold by December 1911. The fact that your endpapers are paper available at the time [to the trade edition] tends to date it.It is possible that someone or firm had this done for your copy #20. Your copy's binding design on front cover is clearly an adaptation of the endpapers but I do not think by Dulac as it does not appear in any of his other editions of Hans Andersen's work. Someone may not have liked the plain cover." If that's the case, we'd like to thank them. This special copy is the better for it. Hughey 27.

Description: Signed limited edition, number 26 of 750 copies signed by the artist. "A really beautiful book, with illustrations of exceptional merit. As pictures for children nothing could be more attractive than Mr Dulac's watercolour drawings" (Review). A prospectus for the opening exhibition of the original artwork is loosely inserted. In an overview of the illustrated book market, one contemporary commentator stated that "for sheer grace and poetry of feeling I am inclined to give the palm to Mr Edmund Dulac. I doubt if Mr Dulac has ever done better work as a book-illustrator than he has put into the series of colour-plates with which he has illustrated Hans Andersen" (Art and Literature, December 1911). Hughey 27a. Review of Politics, Literature, Science and Art, 10 December 1911. Quarto. Original vellum, spine lettered and stamped with decorative device in gilt, front cover with twin fillet and decorative border enclosing lettering and pictorial device in gilt, illustrated endpapers, top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed, silk ties renewed. Colour frontispiece, with captioned tissue guard, and 27 colour plates with captions printed on facing leaves, all tipped inside green frames, as issued, by Dulac. Text printed within green borders with floral head- and tailpieces throughout. Finely etched chivalric knight bookplate of Walter Seawell Ward (1847-1919), a Bradford tailor and sidesman at Ascension Church Balham. Gilt and vellum bright, notwithstanding natural discolouration to spine and green marks to rear joint, occasional faint browning to contents, illustrations unaffected. A near-fine copy.
