A good copy only, covers soiled, the back strip separated at the front gutter, corners worn, hinges separating but holding, old plain bookplate; interior with some soiling but very good.

Description: 306pp plus 10 numbered and two unnumbered pages of advertisements. Brown cloth boards with titles in brown on spine, logo in gold on spine, and Twain's name in gold on front board. Decorative cover shows an elephant's head on a gold background. Shelfwear to spine ends and corners, with one corner showing through cloth. Slight spine lean. Front gutter is split and residue from a piece of paper that was stuck to the cover at some point is on the back board. Binding secure, pages unmarked, though there is damp staining to the lower extremities, radiating outward from the spine crease. Stain faintly visible starting at page 200, and is most visible on last pages and read endpapers. Waviness to back board. Volume collects eighteen of Twain's stories.

Covers are badly soiled--no attempt made to clean them. Fair.

Description: Decorated cloth boards have been professionally repaired, soil & rubbing from many years of use, a 1" half of lower spine cloth cover has peeled away. Previous owners' signatures on front endpapers, some damp staining in margins, a few dog-ears, light foxing throughout; in general a good, solid copy of the very first printing, now protected in a mylar jacket.

Description: Very good minus, first edition book, no dust jacket. Tan cloth covered boards with browning gilt lettering, elephant illustration and decorations on the front panel; similar lettering and decorations on spine. Twelve pages of ads at the back. Boards are soiled and scuffed overall and with several smaller stains. Spine is heavily sunned. There is an old repair of a split at tail of board spine and also appears to be a stabilization repair of the back spine gutter. Upper edge at head of spine is missing and remaining edges at the head and tail of spine are split and fraying. Fore-edge corner tips and adjacent board edges are rubbed through. External page edges are age-darkened. Text pages are age-toned. Pencilled underlining and margin notes on pp. 235-236, some with faint erasures and a resulting closed 3" horizontal tear across the text. No foxing but a few margin smudges. Spine is cracked at pp. 144-145 but text block is stable overall. Please use close-up options for best inspection and in support of condition descriptions.
