Description: A reprint of the Jonathan Cape edition of "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" by James Joyce. The book was originally published in Britain in 1917 by The Egoist Press. Jonathan Cape first re-published the book in 1924, and the book was reprinted throughout the 1920s and 30s. A new edition appeared in 1942, published at the height of World War Two, and was reprinted in 1943 and 1944 [this edition]. ***Near fine in bright green cloth-covered boards with black titles to the spine. The boards are beautifully clean and unmarked, having been protected by the dustwrapper. The top and tail of the spine are only slightly creased. Corners sharp. Edges of text-block also very clean. No foxing. Internally also near fine with a neat contemporary owner's details in mauve fountain-pen ink to the top corner of the front free endpaper. Interior pages clean, with no creases or tears - produced under wartime economy conditions using thin paper. Very slight reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. ***In a very good printed dustwrapper, which has been corner price-clipped on the front flap. The dustwrapper is virtually complete except for a small area of loss at the top of the spine, not affecting the lettering. The colour of the spine of the dustwrapper is slightly faded. Although the dustwrapper is a light yellow colour, there are hardly any marks - just some light browning at the edges. Stephen questions and rebels against the Catholic and Irish conventions under which he has grown, culminating in his self-exile from Ireland to Europe. A Portrait began life in 1904 as Stephen Hero—a projected 63-chapter autobiographical novel in a realistic style. Description: First printing. The volume is lightly edge rubbed, has a tear on the bottom edge near the gutter of leaf 123-124, and a few pages have a faint rippling effect. The edge worn, price clipped, dust jacket, has stains and soiling on the front and rear panels, a crease the length of the spine, nicks at the corners and spine tail, and a 1/8" chip the length of the spine crown. The jacket is now protected in mylar.
