Gray cloth, titles and illustration stamped in white on the cover and spine, color illustration mounted to the cover, gilt tops. Damp stain to bottom edge running throughout (please see photos), covers spotted, 1956 gift inscription in ink on front flyleaf, Auren G. Muir bookstamp to front pastedown and second flyleaf, rear hinge starting. A chronological arrangement of writings on the West and Northwest first published between 1874 and 1902. Includes Muir's reflections of the Puget Sound country and its towns, along with a rich account of his 1888 ascent of his Mount Rainier, with Philemon Beecher Van Trump (1838 - 1916) guiding. (In 1870 Van Trump, with Hazard Stevens, was the first in recorded history to summit Rainier.) KIMES 351.Now protected with a removable clear archival sleeve.

Description: Near fine early (first?) edition in near fine RARE dust jacket. Dark teal cloth covered boards with black pine tree illustrations and black lettering on front panel and spine. Front panel has a small 3/16" round discoloration that matches a similar mark on the front jacket panel. Spine is lightly sunned; several very small crimps and rubs along edge at head and tail of board spine. Glue residue stains on paste down. Upper external page edges are age-soiled; all external page edges have faint foxing. Twelve b&w full page photo illustrations. Text is clean and text block is solid. Dust jacket is lightly soiled overall, a bit more so along folds and upper extremities. Spine is sunned. Small chips/rubs along edges at head and tail of jacket spine and fore-edge corner tips. Inside flaps are not clipped. Please use close-up options for best inspection and in support of condition description. Additional photos available at your request. This ORIGINAL dustjacket is rich in color with slight wear to the edges. The book is bound in the publisher's cloth and is in excellent condition. The binding is tight with NO cocking or leaning and the boards are crisp with minor wear to the edges. There is NO writing, marks or bookplates in the book. A lovely copy.
