Description: The first edition, second state as common, of this famous novel by Graham Greene, published in the US as 'Orient Express.' The first edition, second issue with Savoury referred to as Mr. Quin Savory rather than 'Q. C. Savory' on pages 77, 78, 82, 98, and 131. After reading a review copy, J. B. Priestly became convinced that the the pompous and self regarded character of Savory was based on himself, and threatened a libel suit and to leave Heinemann. Changes were hence made. The first issue is indeed rarely seen as only few copies of the uncorrected text were circulated and even less survive today. This work was Greene's first true success, set on a train journey from Ostend to Istanbul. The book was printed in the US asOrient Express, and made into a film bearing the same name, directed by Paul Martin and starring Heather Angel, Norman Foster, and Ralph Morgan. In a library full cloth binding. In a library full cloth binding. Externally sound with some shelf wear and bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities, general rubbing to the boards and spine, fading to the spine. Evidence of the attempted removal of library stickers to the front pastedown. Professional tape repairing to the inner gutter of the title page. Internally, firmly bound. Light spotting to the fore edge, affecting only the occasional page, otherwise the pages are generally bright and clean throughout. Good

There were some other small changes including the substitution of Dickens for Chaucer on pp. 81-2. However, the dropped colon at the bottom of p.140 is not corrected. 4¾ x 7" pp. [14] + 307. Description: First Edition, second issue with "Q.C." changed to "Quin". This copy with pleasing provenance, having been the famous bibliophile, writer and collector, John Carter's copy with his bookplate. 8vo, publisher's original black cloth, the spine lettered in gilt. [x] 307 pp. A good copy of a very important and collectible book, the binding shows evidence of use, first free-fly excised, some overall mellowing, but still a solid copy and very usable, the hinges strong and in good order. FIRST EDITION OF THIS EARLY GRAHAM GREENE NOVEL. STAMBOUL TRAIN is the second significant novel by Graham Greene. Set on a train journey from Ostend to Istanbul, the book was renamed ORIENT EXPRESS when it was published in the United States. The novel appeared in 1932 and was Greene's first true success. It was taken on by the Book Society and in 1934 adapted as the film Orient Express. The novel focuses on the lives of individuals aboard a luxury express making a three-day journey from Ostend to Istanbul (though Greene uses the old name for the city, Constantinople). The novel opens on board the ferry, on which several of the novel's major characters have travelled from England. Mabel Warren and Janet Pardoe join the train later in Cologne and Josef Grünlich joins it in Vienna. Although these characters are travelling for different purposes, their lives are intertwined in the course of the journey. Other scenes in places through which the train passes are also described, as well as Myatt's high-speed journey by car through the snow-laden countryside to and from the railway station at Subotica. Themes of anti-semitism appear as the train crosses Europe. The novel communicates a sense of unease. The epigraph given the book is from George Santayana, "Everything is lyrical in its ideal essence; tragic in its fate and comic in its existence", which indicates its ambivalence of mood. A major theme there is also the issue of fidelity, the duty to others vis-à-vis duty to self, and whether or not faithfulness to others pays; this theme is most clearly shown in the mental struggles of Czinner and Coral. Description: First edition, second issue, with the corrected text as usual. Greene's early novel is presented here in an attractive example of the dust jacket designed by Philip ("Pip") Youngman Carter (1904-1969). Although published as a novel, Greene later categorized the book as an "entertainment". The character of a pompous author appears in the central section of the novel. In the first issue he was named Q. C. Savory. Upon reading a review copy, J. B. Priestley became convinced that Savory was based unflatteringly upon him. Priestley threatened to leave Heinemann and, as recalled by Greene in A Sort of Life, "if Heinemann were going to lose an author, they would much prefer to lose me". References to "Q. C. Savory" were, accordingly, changed to "Quin Savory". Wobbe A5(a). Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered and with decoration in gilt. With dust jacket. Removed ownership signature to front free endpaper. Corners and extremities of spine slightly bumped, creases to spine, some foxing; a very good copy. Repairs to reverse of jacket, closed tear to spine, some loss to extremities, a good example of a rare and unclipped jacket.

Greene, Graham. STAMBOUL TRAIN. William Heinemann Ltd (1932), London, 1932.

Price: US$3000.00 + shipping

Description: First edition. Second issue as usually seen with "Quin Savory" vs. "Q. C. Savory" - a character name change made at the insistence of J. B. Priestley who "sued Greene for defamation, believing this vain, pompous writer was based on himself -- and rather proving the point by doing so" (David Marsh, The Guardian, 10/19/10). Re-titled ORIENT EXPRESS for the U.S. edition. 8vo black cloth boards; gilt-stamped spine featuring mosque design; 307 pages. Scattered foxing to page edges otherwise near fine; in good to very good dust jacket with old internal tape repair and a few fresh archival ones, some rubbed creasing, few small chips and tears including one touching a few title letters at spine, slight discoloration to spine, and light damp stain along rear spine fold. Increasingly scarce in dust jacket and this one is somewhat better than it sounds.

Greene, Graham. Stamboul Train. William Heinemann, London, 1932.

Price: US$7500.00 + shipping

Description: First edition, second issue, of Graham Greene's thriller, focused on an uneasy group of passengers on the Orient Express as they make their way from Ostend to Constantinople: "the windows shook and sparks flickered like match heads through the darkness." The first issue of the novel was suppressed by Heinemann in response to novelist J.B. Priestley's complaint that the character of "Q.C. Savory" was too obviously a caricature of himself. In this second issue, the character of "Q.C." is renamed "Quin." Following two commercially disappointing novels, Greene was determined to have a success with Stamboul Train: "for the first and last time in my life I deliberately set out to write a book to please, one which with luck might be made into a film." Greene has inscribed this copy with the rueful remark, "Not yet an Entertainment!" Stamboul Train would, however, be repeatedly adapted for film, radio, and television, most notably in the 1934 American picture Orient Express. A near-fine inscribed copy. Single volume, measuring 7 x 4.5 inches: [12], 307, [1]. Original black boards, spine lettered in gilt, original unclipped color pictorial dust jacket. Inscribed on front free endpaper: "For Martin, / from Graham Greene. / Not yet an Entertainment!" Book Society bookplate to front pastedown. Occasional light browning to first and last leaves, expert repair to verso of jacket.
