Price: US$330.00 + shipping

Description: 1st printing. Gilt-stamped light green cloth with pictorial cover in black of Indian horseback. 368pp. Illus. Forner owner's ink address stamp on front paste down & the half-title. A wide-ranging, descriptive tour of the West by an Englishman from Liverpool. Cowan's auction had this description on a copy it sold years ago: "Descriptions of big game hunting in the West during the mid-19th century. The author traveled from England to Canada and the Northern Plains of the U.S. in 1862, as conflict with native peoples in the West was heating up. He mentions that many of the western forts, or posts, were manned by raw recruits, often immigrants, such as the two companies of German soldiers at Fort Abercrombie. Of course, the trained troops were needed farther east, as the Civil War was underway. After a description of violence in the native population clustered around Fort Carlton, Messiter notes: Such acts as these occur very seldom among what are called "Wild Indians," though when semi-civilized they are heard of frequently." Very good copy. We had the hinges professionally repaired. Former owner's library embossment on the lower ffep. Occasional finger smudge.
