Description: 8vo; 693pp. Half-leather and marbeled boards, textblock edges and endpapers also marbeled. Re-backed, retaining original leather spine. Leather spine labels (red and brown) fresh, with gilt bright. Moderate foxing to prelims. Covers lightly rubbed and leather with some staining, and edge rubbed, the foredge corners showing through to boards. Still, esp as viewed from spine, shows off as a quite handsome volume.

Description: Bound in full contemporary black leather with 5 gilt decorated raised bands on spine and a single gilt decoration in the compartments on the spine. The title in gilt on spine. Gilt borders around the edges of covers front and rear and gilt decoration on the inner dentelles. All extremities rubbed/scuffed at corners and spine ends, with some slight marks/scratches/indents to covers, but overall a nice if plainish binding - but still a handsome early copy. ALL hinges, inner and outer, tight and secure. Edges of text block are gilt. Marbled endpapers front and back. Two former owner names and dates written in ink on the second front free endpaper. An Engraved Title Page with a frontispiece portrait steel engraving of Southey, and on the facing title page a large vignette steel engraving of Southey's residence at Keswick. (This Title page is dated 1845 - but presumed used by the publishers from earlier editions). (xxviii) + 828 pp. Contents include Prefaces to the collected Edition in 10 volumes published in 1837/8; Poems concerning the Slave Trade; Botany Bay Eclogues; Sonnets; Monodramas Lyric Poems; Songs of the American Indians; Occasional Pieces; English Ecologues; Nondescripts; Epic Poems; Ballads ; Madoc in Wales; Metrical Tales; etc, etc. Overall a Very Clean, Tight and Bright Very Good Minus copy in a nice original full leather binding. The second edition of this four-volume work in the publisher's original cloth bindings. The commonplace book of Robert Southey, edited by his son-in-law John Wood Carter. Southey was a Romantic poet, alongside his fellow Lake Poets Wordsworth and Coleridge. He held the title of Poet Laureate from 1813 to 1843, a popular poet of the Georgian era. These "commonplace" volumes contain passages reflecting on a variety on subjects, showing Southey's interest in a wide range of topics, and the ways in which he wished to educate himself.The First Series is comprised of 'Choice Passages', with a range of moral, religious, political, and philosophical content; the Second Series covers 'Special Collections'; the Third Series contains 'Analytical Readings', including historical essays; and the Fourth Series includes 'Original Memoranda'.
