Rymill, John [Two Chapters by A. Stephenson and an Historical Introduction by Hugh Robert Mill]. SOUTHERN LIGHTS: THE OFFICIAL ACCOUNT OF THE BRITISH GRAHAM LAND EXPEDITION 1934-37.. Chatto & Windus Ltd., 1938.

Price: US$96.24 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: 1st Edition; xv, 296pp, 80 plate leaves, 8 maps [3 folding colour]. Original apple green cloth covers with gilt titling to spine rather than the spine label. Lower page edges untrimmed. No dustjacket. The British Graham Land Expedition was a completely amateur expedition, except for their ship's Royal Navy Captain and engineer. "The objectives were simple: experience the adventure of polar living, matching danger and daring while exploring Graham Land by ship, sledge and airplane" "To sum up the results of a complex expedition working over a long period is difficult; especially as the scientists of the party will not be prepared to make any definite statements about the research in their particular branches of science for many months, when they will have finished working up their results. But as far as our exploratory work is concerned, we were able to work in a previously unvisited part of the Antarctic and make two major discoveries. First, that Graham Land is part of the Antarctic Continent and not an archipelago, as was previously thought, and secondly, that a great channel running approximately north and south separates Graham Land from Alexander Land. Since our return to England, His Majesty the King has graciously given permission for this channel to be called King George VI Sound." - Author's preface.(Conrad 302, Renard 1337 and 1338, Spence 1017, SPRI 14274). Gift dedication to previous owner on front end paper. There is splitting of the cloth but overall it is in very good condition. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 2 kilogram. Rymill, John. Southern Lights The Official Account of the British Graham Land Expedition 1934-1937 (Signed by W. E. Hampton). Chatto and Windus, London, 1938.

Price: US$186.07 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: W. E. Hampton's (Ham) name and date on end paper. Hampton and Rymill made a 400 mile sledge crossing of Greenland in 1930/31. Rymill appointed Hampton as both Second-in-Command and Chief Pilot to the British Graham Land Expedition. There are numerous references to him in the index. It's not possible to tell if this was Hampton's own copy but it seems very likely although there are no annotations in the book to confirm it. Curiously, when I looked Hampton up on the internet, not one of the links that I found, nor any references in the book (I've not checked every one.) has his name as opposed to his initials. 8 maps (3 folding, 1 on a plate type page and 4 full page on text pages) are all present. The large folding map at rear has a couple of tears to margin that are now reinforced with clear tape. Slightly shaken, as is usual, due to the weight of the text block. Spine slightly dulled with gentle bumping to ends and some staining at base but it's pretty minor. The label has a few spots. Boards are fairly bright although there is a little staining along some of the base of front board. Internally a 1" crack to top of inner hinge and Hampton's name on end paper as well as a tiny mark on leading edge. Contents are otherwise clean. A very nice association copy. Postage will be confirmed when you enquire or order and for light or very heavy books will vary from the ABE quote which is based on a 1kg parcel. N.B. Postage to the USA will often be quite a bit less than the quote on ABE.

Australian born John Rymill (1905-1968) lad the British Graham Land Expedition to Antarctica in 1934, with various scientific objectives including mapping the Graham Land peninsular coast with the aid of aerial photography. It was one of the last privately funded Antarctic expeditions, though Rymill was assisted in crewing the expedition ships (Penola and Discovery II) by the Royal Navy. Vice-Admiral Edgell served as the chair of the Commonwealth Polar Committee, and was instrumental in the further commissioning of Discovery II for scientific survey work in Antarctic waters and around the Falkland Islands.
