Description: Signed and inscribed on the ffep by the author, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, as follows: "To James R. Lawson/Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings". This is a first edition, but it is not the first printing. I know that because on page 184 the big bull alligator was said to be twenty feet. In the first printing of 2945 copies the alligator was said to be thirty feet. In all subsequent printings it was changed to twenty feet. This is an apparent third printing. This is not a book of the month club edition. The second printing was 44,000 copies (BOMC) while the third printing was 10,600 copies. This is the author's first novel which was an instantaneous critical and popular success. This volume has been professionally repaired by reinforcing the inside of the front and back covers and reinforcing the spine at the top and bottom with buckram. Since a trace of foxing was beginning it was professionally sprayed to prevent any further foxing, although it is barely noticeable. This work was done by a European-trained Professional English Hand Bookbinder with more than a half a century of experience. Book itself is now housed in a clear protective brodart jacket. 334 pages. All lettering on front cover and spine is sharp. A historic signatures of the great Pultizer Prize winning author, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. A Florida treasure. Available for immediate shipment, carefully packed in a sturdy box!

RAWLINGS, Marjorie Kinnan.. South Moon Under.. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1933, 1933.

Price: US$962.45 + shipping

Description: First edition, first printing, of the author's first book, the present copy in a notably attractive example of the dust jacket. Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings (1896-1953) was one of the best American local colorist writers of the first half of the twentieth century. Her "contribution to American literature is her memorable evocation of the harsh, colorful, enchanting cracker realm of north Florida's Big Scrub", clear in the present work which "featured Florida "crackers": poor rural whites of Scottish or English stock, with their own archaic vernacular. Deeply empathetic with them and fascinated by their folkways (moonshining, alligator hunting, making do in the wilderness with minimal resources), she lived not only among the crackers but on occasion with them, gathering rich literary material" (ANB). Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine and front cover in blue, gilt rule to front cover and spine. With dust jacket. An excellent copy.
