Colberg A20.1.a notes: "All copies of the first printing were recalled because credit lines were left out," but, as this copy proves, not "All" copies were in fact recalled. This copy is a Doubleday complimentary copy, so stamped on the front pastedown, these pieces on the changing American West include sections on Willa Cather, Bret Harte, Bernard DeVoto as well as Stegner's famous Wilderness Letter. The title page adds to the title: The changing American West. Stegner's love of the West with its aridity and natural beauty allowed him to champion protecting its beauty. His lament on the loss of Glen Canyon (a full chapter here) echoes what Ed Abbey was to write a decade later. Probably, a book that should be read for its profound insights along with the lyrical Desert Solitaire. A near fine copy bound in 1/4 dark green cloth over green paper covered boards stamped in gilt with author's initials, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, faint stain to upper corner, in a handsome unclipped near fine dust jacket lettered in green, yellow and black.
