WODEHOUSE, P.G.. Something Fresh. Methuen, London, 1915.

Price: US$1924.14 + shipping

Description: 8vo, pp. 315. 4pp. advertisements dated Autumn 1915 and 31 pp. catalogue dated 8 May 1915 bound in at rear. Original green boards, lettered in black to front panel and spine. A little cocked, front hinge cracked, spine sunned and small ink blot to front panel. A little spotting to preliminaries and edges of text block. First UK edition, published as Something New in New York thirteen days before its London appearance -- the title had been changed for the American edition, the word 'fresh' having a misleading second meaning on that side of the Atlantic. There are textual differences between Something Fresh and its US edition, mostly made to avoid the reappearance in Britain of material that Wodehouse had already used in Mike in 1909. A key book in the development of what would become the regular Wodehouse dramatis personae, featuring as it does the first appearance of Lord Emsworth and Blandings Castle. An extremely scarce book, too: Nick Townend, in his monograph discussing comparative scarcity of Wodehouse's UK editions (Wooster Sauce, March 2016) ranks it the seventh most elusive title in the canon.
