Bound in dark blue cloth with pictorial stamping in gold gilt to both the front and back boards, as well as gilt decorations and lettering stamped to the spine. Grey illustrated endpapers. Original color pictorial box with coloured illustrated paste down, which is also used as the second illustration in "Young Bekie". Some bumping and wear to box, but in fairly good condition overall. All 16 tipped-in colour plates by Rackham on gray card stock with accompanying captions present and in fine condition; many black and white line drawings found throughout the text as well. All edges untrimmed. Inner contents clean and binding tight. Overall, a remarkably well preserved copy of this book with the original box and glassine jacket. Although there is no stated author on this book, some of the ballads have been attributed to the work of Francis James Child. Rackham's colour illustrations are especially stunning throughout and despite some of the disturbing and grotesque imagery, they all manage to be hauntingly beautiful as well. A rare book with the incredibly scarce pictorial box and glassine jacket, all in very good condition.
