Description: The author's presentation copy of her epic poem, inscribed by Vita Sackville-West to the recto to the front endpaper, with letters from her son, Nigel Nicolson, loosely inserted. The first edition of this work.Author's presentation copy, inscribed to the recto to the front endpaper, 'To Barbara Gorely, from Jeanne Beale, and V. Sackville-West, Sissinghurst'.Interesting association, with a letter from Nigel Nicolson, Vita's son, regarding the association of this work. Envelope addressed from Nigel Nicolson at Sissinghurst Castle loosely inserted, letter addressed from Nigel to Ms. Georgina Joy Monahan in Santa Cruz. Photocopied image of the title page and Vita's inscription in the envelope, with Nigel's written 'Dear John, could you help with this? Who is Jeanne Beale? Nigel'. Typed letter from John Beale to Nigel Nicolson in the envelope, dated 30th April 1999. 'Dear Nigel, Jeanne Beale was my sister: she was born November 15th 1921 and died July 29th 1941. She had Brights Disease contracted when she was a baby and finally died before her 20th birthday of renal failure. Now she would have had renal dialysis and a renal transplant and still be alive in all likelihood. She was thus related to Oswald Beale being his second daughter. I am not sure who Barbara Gorely is. My sister May and I think she may have been a fellow pupil at a school for about half a dozen pupils, which Jeanne attended in 1938. I presume Jeanne gave Barbara Vita's poem Solitude and asked her to sign it. Your mother was very kind to Jeanne and supportive to my parents. Have a good jaunt to the USA! John'. Below in Nigel's hand 'Dear Ms. Monaham, I hope this helps, yours sincerely, Nigel Nicolson'.In the original unclipped dustwrapper.A wonderful epic poem, concerning references to the Bible and important ancient figures.Written by the noted Bloomsbury author Vita Sackville-West, well known today for her friendship and relationship with fellow author, Virginia Woolf. Sackville-West provided the inspiration for Woolf's beloved novel 'Orlando'. Sackville-West was also a noted garden designer at her house Sissinghurst, the garden of which is still celebrated today.Published by the Hogarth Press, the Bloomsbury publishing house founded ran by Leonard and Virginia Woolf. The press was founded in the interwar period, as printing became a hobby for the couple, diverting Virginia when her writing became too stressful. Both Woolfs' taught themselves to use a printing press, publishing 527 titles from the period of 1917 to 1946.Six pages of publisher's adverts to the rear. In the original publisher's cloth binding, in the original unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, smart. A few light marks to the boards. Author's inscription to the recto to the front endpaper. Spots to the paste downs and endpapers. Some edge wear to the dustwrapper, with some chips and closed tear. Light marks to the wraps, with a tidemark to the tail of the wraps.
