Description: pp. xix, 326. 8vo. Bound in original grey-brown speckled cloth with gilt lettering to spine, and gilt-embossed buffalo on the front board. With the original pictorial title page and seven other tissue-guarded, black-&-white illustrations. Two pages of advertising at end removed. October, 1853, signature of former owner inside front board; gift inscript. dated 1895 opposite. Book shows spine slant, with small tear to cloth at top of front joint, wear to edges, hinges split but binding holding. Very minor foxing to margins. Overall, in quite good condition for age, now seldom seen in original binding. An early classic of western adventure, hunting and exploration. Description: Scarce item, particularly in original binding. Original spotted cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine. Gilt vignette of bison to front board. Light stain to rear board. Corners bumped. Spine has discoloured slightly with age and is bumped top/bottom. The page edges are rough cut. Slightly cocked. Frontis and engraved vignette title page and 6 other full page illustrations, as called for. Both inner hinges cracked but holding. Textblock has one or two grubby marks but is generally clean. 326 pp + adverts. Previous owner's mark to half-title page. When securely packed this item will weigh in the region of 533g. Palliser is best remembered as the commander of a British government expedition sent to explore the Canadian west between the Red River and the Rocky Mountains, south of the Saskatchewan River, 1857-60. Palliser (1807-1887) is best known for his explorations of the 49° and 50° parallels in North America (1857-1860) which helped determine the boundary between the United States and Canada.
