This superbly illustrated volume is one of Dulac's finest works, produced at a time when book illustration had reached its peak. The book was immensely popular and the limited edition sold out before publication. It was "issued for the Christmas market and was a runaway success. Dulac's bibliographer. identifies at leat 16 British and American commercial editions published before the end of the 1930s." (100 Great Books Famous inChildren's Literature. Chicago, Univ. of Chicago Press/ Grolier Club, 2015; p. 212) In the monograph on Dulac by Colin White (London: Studio Vista, 1976) the author points to the special coloring of the plates ". a wide range of colors, from the well-known blues to the newer combinations of orange and yellow, and showed Dulac's superb invention at its most imaginative." (pp. 46-47). He won two gold medals at the 1911 Barcelona International Exhibition for a submission that included one of the original drawings for this book (pl. 31). The collection includes four classic French tales: Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Blue Beard, and Beauty and the Beast, and is beautifully bound in London by Sangorski & Sutcliffe Edmund Dulac (1882 - 1953) was a French-British naturalized magazine illustrator, book illustrator and stamp designer. In 1905 he received his first commission to illustrate the novels of the Brontë Sisters, and then began an association with Leicester Galleries and Hodder & Stoughton; the gallery commissioned illustrations from Dulac which they sold in an annual exhibition, while publishing rights to the paintings were taken up by Hodder & Stoughton for reproduction in illustrated gift books, publishing one book a year. Books produced under this arrangement by Dulac include Stories from The Arabian Nights (1907); an edition of William Shakespeare's The Tempest (1908); The Rubáiyàt of Omar Khayyam (1909); The Sleeping Beauty and Other Fairy Tales (1910); Stories from Hans Christian Andersen (1911); The Bells and Other Poems by Edgar Allan Poe (1912), and Princess Badoura (1913). As demand for deluxe children's books dwindled Dulac branched out to do more illustrations, including for the 'The American Weekly'. He also designed banknotes during World War II and postage stamps, most notably those that heralded the beginning of Queen Elizabeth II's reign.
