Condition: Good

Description: Tan cloth with mounted paper label on cover. 32mo. 3 1/2 by 5 1/4 inches. 112 & 109pp. First American edition of these two early etiquette guides. The first, issued under the name "Phiz" was actually written by the satirist Edward Caswall. The second, published six months later, was written by the 26-year-old Charles Dickens at his publisher's suggestion. A good copy with some spotting and edgewear to the cloth but with the cover label entirely intact. It has some rubbing and soiling and there is a small white mark to the rear cover. The text is good but heavily foxed with a stain at the top of the pages throughout the book. There is an early ink owner's name on the front flyleaf.
