Ward, Artemus (pseudonym of Charles Farrar Browne); Landon, Melville D.. Artemus Ward: His Works, Complete. [Four Volumes in One.] With Fifty Illustrations, and a Biographical Sketch. G. W. Carleton and Company, New York, 1875.

Price: US$75.00 + shipping

Pages and covers are very clean and intact overall. There is some edge and corner wear and wear at the top and bottom of the spine. Slight rubbing to the covers. A clipped biographical newspaper article about the author is laid in the back. Artemus Ward is the pseudonym of Charles Farrar Browne (1834-1862). Browne was a writer, humorist, and is considered the first stand-up comedian in the United States. Browne was also apparently the favorite author of President Abraham Lincoln. Before Lincoln read the "Emancipation Proclamation" to his Cabinet, he read one of Browne's stories, High-Handed Outrage at Utica. Browne's on-stage character was "Artemus Ward," an incompetent man with "Yankee common sense." Melville D. Landon (1839-1910) was an American writer, humorist, journalist, and lecturer. Landon wrote under the pen name of "Eli Perkins." This edition is referenced in the Bibliography of American Literature (BAL) as no. 11212 under the "London" section. In another volume of BAL under the "Artemus Ward" section, only a reprint, the 1887 Dillingham imprint, is listed as no. 1361.

Price: US$100.00 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: 320 p. 23 cm. Many b&w line drawings. Blue cloth hardcover with gold and blank impression. Edges and corners worn, tears in top of spine. Some yellowing of pages. Pencil signature from 1876 on a front endpaper. Many pages at front of book stained on bottom half near edge. A few other stains throughout text. A collection of Twain's stories and essays, previously published in various newspapers and magazines. Illustrated by artist True Williams, who became famous for illustrating Twain's books. All the stories are fictional except for "The Case of George Fisher." The best known may be "Cannibalism in the Cars" which tells the darkly humorous tale of apparent acts of cannibalism from the point of view of a congressman on a snowbound train. It indirectly satirises the American political system in a dark manner only Twain could assume.

Mark Twain (PSUED Samuel Langhorne Clemens) [1835-1910]. Sketches New and Old. American Publishing Company, Hartford, 1875.

Price: US$250.00 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: 320 pages with frontispiece and illustrations. Square Octavo (8 3/4" x 6 3/4") bound in original publisher's blue cloth with black and gilt decorative lettering on spine and front board. Lacking the misplaced footnote on page 120, and "From Hospital Days" on page 229. (BAL 3364) First edition, second issue. The size of the first printing is undetermined, but the book was published in September 1875 and by the end of November, 12,985 copies were bound. The bindings offered for this book were the usual offered for the subscription books. Two states exist and BAL describes them. The first contains a very short story at page 299 that was later removed because it was not by Twain. Johnson points out that the manuscript for the story exists in Twain's handwriting with the name of the supposed author (Jane Stuart Woolsey) crossed out. True enough, but Johnson was unaware that Woolsey was a real woman and had published her story in her very real book that appeared in 1868. Twain may have copied it down for a story idea and included it by mistake with the other sketches. Some copies of the first state have a slip inserted at page 299 explaining that the story was not by Twain; other do not. The other feature of the first state is that of a footnote at page 119 is repeated at page 120; in later states the footnote is removed from page 120. Condition: Previous owner's stamp on back end paper, spine ends professionally repaired, back cover lightly rubbed, blue cloth stained at top front gilt star. A very good copy issued without a dust jacket.

Hospital Days was discovered not to have been written by Clemens, but rather by Jane Stuart Woolsey; some copies have an inserted notice denying Clemens' authorship of the piece. A curiosity of this book is that on the spine the title is reversed so that it reads "Sketches Old and New." BAL 3364.

Price: US$675.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Publisher's original gilt-stamped and decorated blue cloth. FIRST EDITION, FIRST STATE, with the footnote on page 119 repeated on page 120, and with the misattributed sketch [From "Hospital Days"] on page 299. Peach endpapers and triple flyleaves. There is some wear to the spine ends, fraying to the corners and edges, and the gilt is not as bright as it once was. Internally, there is a spot of ghosting on pages 174 and 175 where a leaf, perhaps, was laid in. Else, internally, the book is quite clean. An inch and a half of the foot of the rear inner hinge is just starting; else the joints and hinges are intact. Significantly, this is one of only several hundred copies in the First State with GILT EDGES. Copies in cloth with plain edges outnumber those with gilt edges by about twelve to one. A good to very good copy of an uncommon and desirable binding variant. Only the three-quarter morocco binding is rarer. BAL 3364.
