Inner hinges cracked, and binding sections parting, although no pages loose. pos on pre-title & verso pages. some browning to eps. Pages edges unevenly cut. Fading brown cloth cover with gilt leaves for decoration. Immediate despatch from the UK.

Fading in a vertical strip on upper board next to spine, on spine and along the margins of the rear board, front endpaper partially cracked at hinge and some fine spotting to rear endpaper; internally pretty nice. Frontispiece and title page designed by Laurence Housman. pp. [viii] + 65 + [1 blank] + [2 ad] + 16 ads.

Description: Half title, front. & decorated title by Laurence Housman printed in orange. Uncut in orig. green buckram, bevelled boards with gilt leaf design, spine lettered & dec. in gilt; sl. faded. Ink inscription on leading f.e.p. 'J.K. Bathurst, June 1897'. Francis Thompson, 1859-1907, was a renowned poet and author who - after dropping out of medical school in order to pursue his passion for writing - became addicted to opium while homeless and living on the streets of London. After three years on the streets he was taken in by publishers Wilfrid and Alice Meynell, who helped get him treatment for his addiction and supported him while he wrote. He had found success by the time of his death from tuberculosis in 1907, and was well regarded for his poetry and essays, including his most famous poem The Hound of Heaven.
