Beatrix Potter. Sister Anne. David McKay Co, Philadelphia, 1932.

Price: US$500.00 + shipping

It is told from the perspective of Anne, the sister to the eighth wife of Bluebeard. 154 pages. 12 full page illustrations done by Katharine Sturges. First edition, first issue. The frontispiece illustration incorrectly tipped in opposite page 7, instead of the title page, as it was in later copies. Blue cloth binding, hardcover, with glint stamping on spine and front board. 7 3/4" x 5 1/4" Sister Anne was the last story written by Beatrix Potter and published while she was alive. It was only published in the United States. The overall condition is very good. There is the slightest hint of wearing on the spine and corner of the cover. Binding is tight. The pages are discolored due to age, otherwise minimal damage.

Potter, Beatrix; Sturges, Katherine. SISTER ANNE. David McKay Company, Philadelphia, 1932.

Price: US$1350.00 + shipping

Description: First edition of Potter's gothic retelling of Bluebeard, the second issue (with frontispiece properly placed) in the scarce original dust jacket. Beatrix Potter was unable to bear the strain of providing illustrations for SISTER ANNE, therefore the publisher had them executed by American artist Katherine Sturgis. Potter was pleased with Sturgis' artistry, praising her use of black that gave the story "an effective air of mystery" (Linder). This title did not enjoy the popularity of Potter's earlier works, perhaps because it lacked her characteristic art. Potter's evocative and atmospheric narrative make this obscure work unusual in her oeuvre. The last of Beatrix Potter's works published in her lifetime, it was never published in England. 7.75'' x 5.25''. Original gilt-stamped blue publisher's cloth binding. Original pink pictorial dust jacket. Illustrated with full-page black-and-white frontispiece with 12 full-page black-and-white plates. 154 pages. Bookseller's label to lower front pastedown, "Mr. Cooper Milliken/ 14 Oak Street/ Old Town Maine." Jacket with sunning to spine and rear top edge, some tape repairs to verso and a couple small chips (one affecting "Si" in the spine title). to edges. Book unusually bright and sharp. Near fine in very good dust jacket.

POTTER, Beatrix.. Sister Anne.. Philadelphia: David McKay Company, 1932, 1932.

Price: US$2576.53 + shipping

Description: First edition, first issue. With the frontispiece incorrectly published opposite p. 7, rather than than title page. A Fairy Caravan offshoot, this is Potter's version of the tale of Bluebeard. It was withdrawn from The Fairy Caravan due to its length, and Potter now offered it to McKay as a story on its own. Due to her age and poor eyesight, Potter was unwilling to undertake the illustrating of Sister Anne, but was very pleased by the pen-and-ink artwork prepared by Sturges, commenting "Do thank Katharine Sturges from me for interpreting just what I meant!" It was never formally published in the UK, though some unbound sheets were submitted for copyright purposes. It was the last of Potter's books to be published in her lifetime. Linder, p. 430; Quinby 31. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles and decoration to spine gilt, top edge yellow. With dust jacket. Frontispiece and 12 illustrations by Katherine Sturges. Bookseller's ticket to rear pastedown. Spine faded, some spotting to edges of text block, contents toned. A very good copy in the jacket with some loss to spine ends and panels, neat repair to verso at folds.
