Bound as described in Blanchard (black cloth and front cover with pink bricks, yellow and red flowers with green leaves and red and black stems) and with the full title on the spine and shortened title (Sir Quixote) on the front, both in yellow lettering. Bumped corners. Spine a little dull. Bright internally but front hinge cracked and a little shaky. Rubber stamped name on paste-down.

A few small brown spots to bottom edge; removed bookplate inside front cover; small chip to margin of page 75-6, not affecting text; pin-pricks & tiny rust spots to preliminary leaves from removed pin. Otherwise clean, tight and unmarked. Very neat -- a sound and handsome copy of this beautifully published and scarce volume. Size: 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall

In this case the book is bound in red cloth with the short title on the spine and front cover in black. The bricks are orange, the flowers red and yellow with green and red stems and the front has a black cross-hatched border. The spine has faded to a pink shade and there are 2 ownership signatures on the fly-leaf but otherwise the book is very good. Scarce in this binding.

It is a novel of romance and tension set in Galloway in the days of the Covenanters. 188 pages, followed by 1 4-page selection from Unwin’s catalogue. Black cloth with striking decoration in red, pink, yellow and green. The binding is in very good condition with just light rubbing at the ends of the spine and very lightly bumped corners. Internally excellent with an uncracked binding. There is a pencilled name on the front paste-down. A very nice copy of the version with the full title on the spine.

Blanchard notes both black and red cloth variants of the first edition and this is the red version, more scarce than the black.188pp + 4pp publisher’s adverts. Red cloth with black lettering and green and yellow flower design. The spine is a little faded and has slight wear at the foot. The corners are rubbed and there is light staining on the rear. Internally bright and clean with just lightly browned endpapers. The hinges are cracked but the binding remains firm although very slightly cocked. Overall a good, sound copy.

Taffy Boulter was one of JB’s close friends at Brasenose and their rooms were on the same staircase. An exceptional association copy.

Spine very lightly sunned and bumped, some very light rubbing and marks to rear board and also a slight crease to the cloth which looks like it was perhaps a fault in the cloth at the time of binding. Front board clean and bright. Endpapers browned and some of the pages have been roughly cut, very occasional small smudge mark to page edge, otherwise contents are clean and tight. Overall a very tidy copy of this first edition. Size: 12mo

Attractive little bookplate of Hamill to the pastedown, with a small set of neatly inked numbers in the upper corner. Fresh and tight copy, with beautifully decorated boards, with borders and outline drawings in pink, filled in with green and yellow, and a bold pink brink wall right at the top.
