Number 254 of 430 copies printed at the Riverside Press for Houghton Mifflin & Company. Reprinted from the 1680 edition of Quarles "Divine Poems", which offeres a more consistent and a slightly more modern text than the original edition of the Sonets published in quarto in 1625. Some light finger soiling to covers and verso of page opposite title. No name, no book-plate, etc. A very good copy.

Description: This small, approximately 4 1/4 by 6 1/2 inch, book has red covers with gilt lettering on the spine. Of the 430 copies printed this is number 344. There is a previous owner's book plate affixed to the front paste down and a gift inscription in ink dated Dec. 1927 below the book plate. There are 125 pages to this volume which is printed on watermarked paper. The title page is in red and black ink, but the remainder of the book was printed in black only. The boards show some soiling, and wear-epecially at the spine and edges. There is the beginning of some light spotting to the interior of the book. Please look at the photos carefully.

The Song of Songs is an erotic poem that celebrates sexual intimacy and love. In Christianity it is read as an allegory of Christ and the Church (his bride).
