Ruth Plumly Thompson and L. Frank Baum. The Silver Princess in Oz. The Reilly & Lee Co. of Chicago, 1938.

Price: US$350.55 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: The Silver Princess in Oz is the 32nd installment of the series as continued by Ruth Plumly Thompson. This copy is in very good condition, and would be in fine condition for its age except for several minor flaws. There is a blot on the spine leading to the cover on the bottom left of the book, it's less than half an inch long and a little over a quarter of an inch wide, see pictures. There is mild scuffing along the endcaps of the spine on the bottom. There are a few small spots on the top of exterior pages. There are one or two spots on right-facing external pages. This book has an owner's name and previous seller information on a blank insert page at the beginning. Also, between two insert pages, the binding has become visible. The same is true between pages 254 and 255. All other pages sit firmly in the binding. It is both readable and displayable. It is 9.25 inches high and 7.25 inches wide. Pages seem to be grouped in segments of about 16, front and back. This could be a first edition, but it does not contain a dust jacket. Whether it's the first edition or first state is unclear. A picture of Handy Mandy is included on the spine, which indicates it's likely early. Editions published after 1935 did not feature color plates, so there are no color illustrations in this edition. The book's binding is a gentle olive green hue, and it's difficult to determine its exact era. It appears to be pre-fifties at minimum. At best, it could be a first edition, first state of the book. Due to the question, this piece has been priced accordingly. 255 Numbered Pages.

Plumly Thompson, Ruth. The Silver Princess in Oz. The Reilly & Lee Co., Chicago, 1938.

Price: US$375.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: The Reilly & Lee Co., 1938. Chicago. 255 pages. 1st edition. Per Hanff & Greene page 102-103, this is the 31st title in the series, printed in 1938. According to the DJ on this copy, it lists books in the series up to and including the 36th title: Magical Mimics in Oz - 1946. The following title in the series is The Shaggy Man of Oz which is not listed on the DJ flap and was published in 1949. As a result, this printing of The Silver Princess in Oz is likely from 1946-1949. As for book, orange cloth is clean and nice with colored illustrated front board. Backstrip lacks any HandyMandy illustration which is usually found on the 1st printing. Copyright page states 1938 and I imagine copies from the 1970s, probably state 1938 as well. Basically, the DJ is the tell-all. As for this DJ, $2.00 price is intact on flap. DJ is bright and attractive however chips and rubs around edges / crown/foot of spine are the reasons for a conservative grade of Good on DJ condition. A chip of the DJ backstrip partially affects the P in Princess. Book is tight and clean with only light rubbing to edges/corners. no writing within. Book could possible grade higher as might the DJ. An attractive copy with a removable acid-free DJ protector in place.
